Thanks. Just wasted 15 minutes of company time browsing that.

You know what? I just felt a slight sense of loss, looking at all
those lovely pictures and descriptions. The Brits had the world in
their hands, and they chucked it away.

Sucking his keyboard for inspiration, Austin Shackles typed:
Thanks Austin - bookmarked for a browse later.

Some of the artwork reminds me of a recent article in CBG/CMM (can't
remember which) about trials in the 1950s - with all the competitors wearing
flat caps and gaberdine coats, and smoking pipes *on a "difficult" section*.
    Wonderful.

Ceased manufacture of D Series in '55, per various internet sources.
Sounds about right. Catalogue ascribed to 1960 doesn't seem to have a
date on it. A mis-description of an earlier catalogue? Company continued
with other activities until '59, then went through receivership and is
said to be still making spares today. Did any unsold machines stay with
the company until '59? Presumably the Owners Club has some sort of
    record of individual machines produced.

Now if a Vincent were to turn up, pristine and dry-stored, in it's
    export crate...

You can buy a new one today.
The VC makes/sources all the parts and if you supply enough money....

  7. I don't think I could afford it.

As far as I know only the Vincent Spares Co. is still making spares, and
I don't think it was officially linked to Vincent-HRD.

Down memory lane with a vengeance. Reminded me how the AMC group would
*never* quote power figures, but Triumph happily claimed 40BHP for the
    '62 Trophy.

I don't really see the point. I'd like a Vincent, but I'd want one
with patina, history and all the rest of the intangibles that buying
such a legend entails. If I want a new and very expensive bike I'd
want something highly exotic and cutting edge. A new Vincent seems
    somehow neither.

  10. My feelings too.

That said, a mint Series C Shadow is on my want list.

I'd ride it to the airfield and climate-controlled hangar where I'd keep
    my Mark Five Spitfire.

I *love* the Norton Commando catalogue:

"Choose the high-compression engine for the ultimate performance for
    short periods".

    They got that right...

My dad had a Brough Superior sometime in the late '50s or early '60s,
previously owned was Malcolm Campbell. I think there's a picture of it
somewhere, I shall have to dig it out. I remember him saying lots of bits on
    it were brass plated.

    I suspect I wish he'd kept it.

    I have to ask, why?

Please note, I'm not a bikist. I don't know the first thing about what a
Brough Superior is / was other than a 30 second google, but I do remember my
dad waffling on about it being the one thing he regretted selling.

  17. Vincent Black Shadow/Laverda Jota/Z1 of its day.

Did 100mph in the 1920s/1930s. Google for Lawrence of Arabia and Brough
Superior - he wrote a classic piece about racing his against (IIRC) a
Bristol Fighter aircraft. He named his bike Boanerges.

replace most of it getting it to work properly.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc.

Makes electroplating a little tricky, if my memory of 'O' level
physics is still working. Or was it chemistry?
