Old barrels

I got given an old set of barrels for my xs250 but they're in pretty poor
condition with rust on the steel liners and white build-up on the aluminium.

What's the best way of cleaning them up to see if they're still usable and
to ensure I don't damage them?

    Thanks for any help,

    Shane.

If the barrels are rusty there's not much hope.
If there's no visible pitting but just 'red dust`, try a brass wire brush
    and "Gunk` brake cleaner - (Don't Inhale).
If the bores look OK, have them checked for size.
If they pass, a few passes with a hone , repaint the fins and you're set.
There are a lot of 'ifs1 but what the hell, it's getting too cool to ride.
