You could also try a can of easy start up the air intake, if it don't go
    then, then it don't go.

Cheers all, well just spent a half hour or so draining the tank and
refilling with fresh fuel, but still no joy :-(
Me thinks the carbs are gonna have to come off today :-/

Even better, buy a new set, they're not expensive.

As others have said make sure the points gap (if it has points) is
correct and the timing is set correctly. If the timing is far enough
out, or the points aren't opening corretly, it won't even cough.

If you have fuel and sparks it's normally timing or plugs (they fail
    under compression when cold).

Another trick is to pour a small amount (teaspoon) of petrol down the
plug holes then screw plugs back in and try again.

Does the choke work? Is the air filter choked with twigs and dead
    animals?

    How fucked is the battery?

The ones in my race bike are £120 quid a set.

If the petrol tank smells of gloss paint you *will* have to clean the
carbs. It's gone off and gummed up the works.

Use cellouse paint thinners, it's cheaper than carb cleaner, or just use
a aerosol carb cleaner. Knock yourself out.

I'll apologise if your race bike is a CB350 ...

    No apology necessary!

I did a quick web search, but couldn't find the prices of NGK racing
    plugs listed anywhere.

Quite. The 'new' race ZX7R I picked up recently refused to start this
weekend - it had been standing since August. I took the float bowls
off and found that 3 of the 4 pilot jets were blocked. Remove, blow
through, replace, re-fit carbs - started instantly.

Concentrate on the pilot jets and the floats/float valve needles first. An
overnight soak in carb cleaner might be nesseccary.
If it`s running CV`s check for splits in the diaphrams, this won`t affect
the starting but you might as well look while you`re there.

Might do that once ive stripped and cleaned out the carb as necessary
Dunno if its points or not yet, not delved into it that deep today. But Ill
    check.
Was gonna try that, but ummmmmmm didnt
Choke works, air filter is a little dirty but actually looks pretty good.
Was fine, prolly fucked now though with my trying to continually start it.

    *thud*

That almost puts Alfa Romeo to shame..... I'm sure Andy Hewitt will be
able to give us the cost of replacing OEM plugs on a twin-spark engine.

    Heh.

ISTR a single, platinum tipped Golden Lodge is £20. So that's £240 a
    set.

They are specified to last 60k miles, though.

Good job mine accepts a cheaper alternative (£24 a set)

    Not a jot :)

    Moving on though.
This evening, ive managed to work on the carbs and so far ive determined
that the floats are intact, the float needles are fine and the jets appear
clean. The throttle is definitely working and the choke lever is moving up
    and down properly.

What I do wonder though, looking inside the carbs, there's the two pistons
yeah? Do they not, or should they not move up and down. I don't mean in the
way engine pistons do, im not that thick, but surely these must move up
somehow when applying the throttle to allow more fuel / air through and
    hence speed??
