TBF, I thought that Sony made losses on all their PS hardware and
recouped the difference with content license fees. Much like printers
    and ink cartridges.

    ICBW, of course.

My impression of Apple is there's quite a large gulf between brand
perception & hardware reality. Much like with modern BMW bikes.

That may also be the case, to a certain extent. The point in the
programme was that there is no *need* for a games console to have a
BluRay player, yet Sony do it anyway just to get millions out in the
    market.

They also lifted their ban on porn on BluRay too (it was said that
their not allowing porn on Betamax pretty much did for it vs. VHS).

Oh, yes. Well that's sensible marketing.
That made me chuckle and shows how short-sighted top down control of
    content can be.

Is it urban myth or is the US porn industry really worth more than the
softer side of the film business?

I've read it may be, I've also read that it would be even bigger but is
significantly affected by ginormous amounts of piracy.

Wikipedia says 10-13 billion for the porn industry (4-6 billion of this
legal). The legit film industry is about 10 billion.

The film industry seems to punch above its weight, though. For instance,
it's very odd that they manage to keep pushing through extra laws on
piracy and copyright when the computer/software industry (which bears
most of the cost of implementing them) is so much bigger in size.

Well, I've bought a few (four?) apple laptops and from my personal
experience they are a lot better than the Dell crap I get forced on me
    at work.

I haven't used a modern Tosh or Sony so can't comment how good these
    are.

I've also had a couple of Mac Minis; one died and was replaced without
trauma. Looks like it was a voltage regulator that went, however it
did go a couple of hours after I added more memory and a bigger hard
disk. Not sure if it was 'my fault'.

I've also got a couple of Apple TV boxes and a few bits of their
    networking kit.

My experience has been that they do make (generally) reliable products
that do what they claim to. I don't have 'support problems' and some
of the kit is running 24/7 and has been for a few years- admittedly in
    a domestic environment.

They are expensive and are masters at trading on their brand. I don't
see myself switching from mac stuff in the near future though.

I've heard that from a source that I trust who should know (Sony
    subsidising PS hardware)

I lashed out the cash on a MacBook Pro but that was mainly because the
solid aluminium body appealed to the hidden engineer in me and it
appears to be a lot more resistant to being thrown around in a holdall
    than most laptops.

The fact that I'm overpaid and have more money than sense was another
major factor. Next thing you know I'll be buying shite old bikes (1) for
    no good reason.

    (1) Or new ones. The temptation to buy a mental 2-stroke is beating me
    up on a daily basis.

I don't really ever want to get that attached to (or that 'dependent'
on for that matter) any piece of technology.

Would you really be lost ? it's only a gadget ..

  14. I would certainly miss it for a while, all the jolly things it can do
like mapping, recognising tunes, finding lyrics, letting me know when a
new exoplanet is discovered, weather reports, Facebook, Twitter,
Internet Radio stations, checking my game character status....
But in the end yes, it's just a gadget for the impatient. My Dad always
gasps in horror at my £45 p/m O2 bill. So is there a really cheapie
cheap O2 option for just an ordinary phone for text and calls?

I thought that was the MO for many games console manufacturers, TBH.
