My favourite locksmith dropped by this morning and handed me two sets
of keys for the Bimota. After refitting the steering lock (bit of a
barsteward of a job, I don't think they're supposed to be taken
off/put on with the front fairing still in place) I've now got "my
most reliable bike" (tm Lozzo) running again.

And all that because of some arse who decided to break into my house
and nick all my keys. Oh well, at least it was the cheapest to get
back on the road so far.

    Excellent.

I just find it hilarious that of all the bikes you've owned recently,
including Hondas, BMWs, and now a Pan Euro, a Bimota of all things is
the only one that never goes wrong.

Maybe I should re-evaluate my views on Italian bikes.

On a fairly regular basis. Admittedly not recently due to the fact
that I didn't have any keys for it, but normally I use it once or a
couple of times a week, depending on the weather.

I even use it to commute occasionally.

Yeah, but they're taking the mickey - going rate for a YB8 at the
moment appears to be around 3.5k.

These bikes aren't worth loads, at least not compared to what they
cost when they were new. And of course they don't have the street cred
    of an R1, either :).

Whose engine is in the YB8?

There's a clue in the designation.

Hint, SB8 is a Suzuki engine. DB1 is a Ducati.

Outside my garage, you'll find it fairly hard to find a non-minter
(OK, I know of one other one...)

Most of them have to suffer more polishing and less riding than your
    average stockbroker's Harley.

Going to http://www.bimota-enthusiasts.com/ and having a look in the
'For Sale' section might make it worse.

    There's a YB6 on there for 3.5k and a YB10 (Dieci) for 4k.

The Suzuki-engined ones appear to be more expensive, which is a bit
strange since the SB6 was the one they made the most of.

Actually, neither did any of my Morini 3 1/2s.
Only if the owner hasn't tried to rewire them. And I may be many
things, but not even I am crazy enough to try and ride a Ducati on a
    daily basis.

Although if the recovery service would employ some decent totty...

I'm not just leaping to the defence Italian machines simply because I
have one as a daily hack.

IME they are no worse than a contemporary Jap machine. Sometimes less so
as they're easier to work on and tend to have Lucas type spade connectors
(a lot easier to replace or clean).

I only recently replaced the switchgear on my Guzzi because Mr "It WILL
fit - ahh, but not that way round" was in town and broke the light switch
    after cleaning the contacts.

Other than that and an eight year old bodge ("I'll get round to it soon")
have let me down electrically. Although the MZ rear light unit it has
did manage to vibrate the rivets out; which was odd.
