Oily air filter

  1. What would cause that then? My bike smells like it's running rich so I
    whipped the AF out and it's like oily inside; not slimey like actual oil
    but it's not dusty iykwim.

    Also, why would I have oil coming from the crank case breather pipe?

    Nothing to worry about: how old is the filter?
    Because - and this may surprise you - the crankcase is full of oil
    fumes, due to being half-full of oil being flung about all over the
    place and being fucking hot at the same time. That's why you have a
    crankcase breather: to extract said fume and breathe it into the
    engine where it is burned off.

    I did check the oil level actually, I topped it up the other day by a
    guess amount and there's a couple of millimeters over the max on the
    dippo sticko - That would explain the oil in the crank case breather
    pipe but not the air filter; the filter's not wet with oil but has the
    appearence of having filtered oily smoke iyswim.

    What's the consensous on those cone shaped jobs, like K+N style filters,
    one for each carb type efforts?

    really needs a replacement.

    This is usually caused by modification of the standard bodywork causing
    unplanned eddy currents in the air box region, which will be exacerbated
    by using reduced length silencers which rob the engine of vital back
    pressure causing non optimum swirl characteristics in the head during
    the exhaust stroke, resulting in an oil vapour mixture being forced back
    through the carburettor into the air box.

    If your filter was oily from the engine breather, I'd expect it to look
    black and oily on the outside, which it didn't. The filter is black on
    the inside, coz it's sucking London air in from the outside through
    those little intakes. Just replace it and stop being such a pikey.

    looks like that. The one that was in it when I got it was like that and
    it didn't live in London then.

    I want to get a K+N for it but what do you think of these?

    I need to measure the carb opening. I know the throttle bodies are
    38.5mm but that's not much good if I want the filters to bung on the air
    side. I'm in agreement with you though, I reckon they look good and will
    look pretty spiffy without the standard airbox in the way.

    Be prepared for many hours of carb fiddling, or many £££ on a dyno, if
    you fit those. Even then it'll most likely never run right. The airbox
    does a lot more than just hold the air filter.

  15. Matt black paint makes it worse, because it absorbs heat and overheats
    the oil, producing more mist.

  16. Worst case is piston blow-by. Yer bores/rings are shagged, matey.

    Or it might simply be too much oil.

  17. Yes, and one of the other jobs it does is provide support for the outer
    ends of the carbs. Many shagged intake rubbers die an early death
    because of the entire carb weight being on them.

    and it runs sweet as a nut.
