    dave_h is of the opinion:
Hahahahaha. Same reaction James and I had first time we did a change on
    SWMBO's. "What the f**k?"
Twice now. It's not fun. I run the bike up to temperature, dump the oil,
and then change the filter once everything cools down again. No way in hell
I'm getting that up close and personal with a hot block.

Get the oil filter wrench from Stupid Cheap Auto which looks like something
you'd strangle a cat with -- metal loop and a bolt that goes up the middle
and resizes the hole. None of the usual strap-n-handle types are small
enough. You've also only got about 40 degrees of movement with the wrench,
so something easily shiftable is the ticket.

If you don't know the sort of wrench I'm talking about, mail me and I'll
take a picture of mine and post it for you. It's a sweet bit of kit.

Wow, did I understimate how hard it might be...

the filter is poking out the front facing side of the 4cyl block
underneath and behind the behind the exhaust header, below a radiator
and and behind a radiator like oil cooler. I took the bottom of the
fairing off (looks quite cool like that actually) and just sat and
stared at the filter location in horror...

I ran out of time that day. I had warmed the engine up so the oil would
be more viscous but those hot pipes are too clse to get my hand or a
    tool near the filter

Anyone else tried this? any tips they can offer?.

Use some sort of Oil filter wrench. Ideally you'll have bought this while
your bike still has oil in it, so you'll have ridden your bike to the car
accessory shop, taken the tool out to the carpark before purchasing it to see
if it was the right size for your oil filter and the amount of access you have
to it when the bike is hot.

    Motorcycle Oil Filter Socket tool

Goes on the end of a 3/8 socket extention bar which pokes out through the
    headers, Then use socket wrench.

Buy one for $20 & you will use it for many many different bikes as most have
    spin on oil filters nowadays

Is this a bike-shop item Daron, or can you get it from Repco, Supa Cheap
    etc?

I had the same problem with the R1100 on Saturday but I heated up the end of
an old bit of PVC drain-pipe and squished it over the end of the new filter
    then let it cool.
When it had "set" I pulled it off the new filter and the used it to grip and
    unscrew the old filter.

I doubt that it's solid enough to last the BeeEm's lifetime though.........

    oilfilter-claw will get it off.
Not cheap but boy it works.
Basically 3 arms with bent ends, the tips are sharpened and hardened.
Gear-driven top with 1/2 female articulating the 3 arms simultaneously.
Sit over oilfilter (needs depth of about 15mm), with arms biting the
    oilfilter.
Use 1/2 drive or 21mm spanner on the outside and loosen, the harder you go
the harder the tips dig into the sides of the filter.
Tool shop/ about $120/ cheaper Taiwanese stuff around, too, ~~$30

    cheers

Excellent, from your picture, it looks the goods! I know the car style
oil filter side wrenches which use a bendy metal strip with rubber on
the inside and some sort of ratchet mechanism. I just didnt think they
    would have enough clearence.

are all modern (ie last 10 years) filters the same size? I cant see any
adjustmet in that think of yours...

Ive got a socket set that says "1/4 inch drive" , I guess I'll have to
buy that extension to match the tool you reccomend.

there are different sizes for different bikes.

There is a VERY universal size though - Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki & Honda
which is the one I have which is the one pictured

  11. Dont id its universal like the Jap ones, but i've seen both cheap cad plated
filter tools and diecast ones for the BMW, suits both R1100/1150 and K
series, we've got the cast one. Are you using the cheaper 318 car filter?
(about 1/3 the price of an OEM K filter)

    Thanks Daron.
The BM shop quoted me $23 today (although they haven't got any in stock) so
    I'll just get one there.
    Cheers .... Clem

Ray used a "Mahle" one but I bought a BM one from the non-dealership "BM
    Shop" at Stafford (Qld).
It was only $13-ish so I assume it's the cheaper car one..

Any idea where to get the Mahle ones? (Ray reckoned they were better)

The R60 does not have a filter, just slingers.

I don't consider myself brave at all but I did my oil and filter last
weekend on the ZZR 600 (96 model to be precise). Got ym hand in there
after things had cooled and found I couldn't turn the oil filter anyway
so out came the scredriver and hammer. Gotta sus out this oil filter
socket people are taling aout but the screwdriver did the job just fine.

Get a K&N filter - they have a 14 or 17 mm hex nut (drilled) built into the
    end of them

Makes taking it off so simple
