Oil changes

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Grimley_Feindish, Jun 23, 2004.

  1. When I picked my bike up a couple of weeks ago the dealer said that when I
bring it in for a first service they will need it for a couple of hours as
they have to let the engine cool down before they can change the oil.

Now this goes against everything I have ever been told, read or practiced
with regard to oil changes and, indeed, is contrary to the hand book that
comes with the bike - which states "thouroughly warm the engine up...". Is
there some crap H & S rule that means workshops are not allowed to drain hot
oil or was he talking bollocks?

If the engine is *HOT* would you want to stick yer hand under the stream
of oil as it pours out?

Warmed up on the other hand is different i.e. start from cold until the
    engine is *warm* not *HOT*

They have to let it cool to do the valve adjustments, not the oil
    change.

    anything they did however.

  6. Can't say I've ever been tempted to stick my hand under the stream of oil,
hot or cold. I see what you're saying though. With hindsight I guess he
meant let it cool down a bit but had left the key word off the end.

No idea about the ZX10, but my NX650 & R1150 manuals specified valve checks
    on the first service.

Only time I've ever been asked to bring the bike in early enough to
let the engine cool is when they've been doing the valve clearances.
