Time to change the oil on my new old jigger today, anyone know roughly how
many litres I need for a 89 gsxr 750? I have not got a manual and Google is
not turning it up for me. Yes I could get a pdf reader and download the
manual but adobe gives me the shites.

I think you'll hate the smart arse answers more than you hate Adobe
Reader.. ? These days it's a necessary evil.

Me too - that's why I use Foxit Reader. Carry it around on my keyring
    USB. Tiny and fast.

Fine. Use Ghostscript + GSview instead.

    Olley,

If you don't know then hunt around for a stamp on the case or case cover
which should have the amount stamped on it. If not, use the sight glass or
dip stick before dropping the oil. If it reads on the stick or in the window
then you can top up that amount.

If it doesn't read any level then I'd add 100ml at a time until it registers
after filling up with the same amount that dropped out. Once it registers
as normal in the window or on the stick start up the bike and allow to warm
up then stop and RECHECK the levels after it's settled.

    Top up as required.

That is pretty farked up....I'd really just wait until Monday and ring
    Suzuki Australia.

Even when you know the capacity, you can still mess it up if you try
    hard enough.

I changed my oil yesterday. I know it takes 2.2l with a filter change,
and the oil bottle showed it was 2.5l down from the top. So I put all
but about 300ml into the sump. Checked level with dipstick. Had a
quick double-take and remembered the "bargain" 6l bottle of oil.

If you don't mind getting very messy, it is possible to drain a litre of
oil by unscrewing the sump plug then putting it back in quickly... about
    five times......

For some reason, since I resumed being a maths teacher, my arithmetic
    has gone to pot.

Screw it, I was going to do the change yesterday but today (this arvo) I am
going for a ride to another town to meet some mates at a pub so I will leave
it a day or so now however, I will make sure it is done before going to work
    on Monday.

Is it absolutely nec to replace the sump washer crusher thingy or can you
get away with not doing it at a between service interval?, thanks for the
help guys, nice newsgroup you guys have here v helpful.

    regards

I hear that's the way it is with Ducatis. If you do you own service (not
replacing the washer) the bike weeps. If you have it serviced at a Ducati
dealer, the bike doesn't weep, but you do.

I usually replace it every time I change the oil filter.
Not because I'm fussy, but because the Oil filters I get online come
with a crush washer and I'm too tight to waste it.

Don't go tipping 4.5 litres in there all at once. You probably won't
need to refill it with that much. More likely it'll be about 1.litre
less. Manufacturers often specify several different oil refill
levels, my ZX12R even had all 3 stamped on the casing.. How much was
required for a complete refill after an engine build, how much was
required with and also without a filter change. 4.5 litres sounds
like a complete refill, but that's an oil cooled model, so perhaps it
has a very large capacity. I'd be inclined to start small and work
your way up as suggested by other posters, and also, if it's oil
cooled, probably worth getting your hands on a manual and finding out
if a drain from the sump is all taht is required or if there are
    additional drain points as well.

Really? I thought for a bike as old as yours you'd just cut a new one
out of a piece of leather! ;-)

"They"? How many did you have?

Since they cost nothing, you probably should have started the bidding
    at $3.50
