My puter's basically fucked. How do I go about getting a useful engineer to
fix it? Last guy I called out was pretty clueless.

Well I've got a little network going on anyway, so data transfer wouldn't be
a prob, but I'm loathe to chuck out a dual 1.2 , 1 GB m/c just because of
some OS conflict with the DVD and CD drive.

Basically, the ripping/burning software can see the cds but explorer can't.
It's beyond me to know deal with it and I don't want to pay someone 25
quid/hr to sit and stroke his chin.

has it always been like this, or only recently started misbehaving?

Did the box come with both the CD and DVD drives, or did you add one
    later on?

Used to be fine. And both drives have always been there. There was a time
when I could access them by logging in as administrator but that option's
gone as well. I've taken to transferring the cd data over the Lan from
another mc now which is ridiculous. So basically I can put a cd in and rip
tracks with the related software (Plextor tools) and burn CDs with Nero. But
Win2K can't see them and so I can't install anything.

    Assuming Windows 2000 or XP:

Go to Control Panel, then Administrative Tools, then Computer Management

In Computer Management, click once on Disk Management (tree thing on left
hand side). You should see on the RHS a load of entries for the disks on
your system. Find the one called CD Rom or DVD Rom or whatever, right click
and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths".

If the window which then pops up is empty (i.e. no drive letters assigned)
then that's your problem. Click Add ... , tick "Assign the following drive
letter" (having picked an easy one to remember - I'm particularly fond of
"D") then OK everything and you should be away.

If that doesn't work, chuck it in a skip.

Nah- it can see the drives- hence it can read them via some software. It's
just Exporer that insists on you putting a cd in when there's already one
there. I'd think the drives were borken but the chances of them both fucking
up at the same time is pretty remote.

    Thanks though.
