Shitty ideas... That's got me wondering if any of the managers in my office
have cut the cheese in the past 20 years. Hmm.

  2. Sorry, stupid question -- do the superlites fit the same carriers
as their "regular" ductile iron rotors?

If you win the Lotto or somethin' you should try the ceramics and
    let us know.... ;-)

Oh great. Now I see the route. The last time I was up there, I stayed
with friends in Kelseyville. They live on Kelsey Creek Road and when I
left, I just turned west out of their driveway. It turned into
    Highland/Old Toll Road. That's a really fun road and I don't regret
it, but I think the ST1100 would have been happier on the pavement of
    175.

  6. Thanks Steve...

You know that Kevlar Belts have 4 advantages over steel chain...

    1) 3 pounds lighter...
    2) no chain snatch...
    3) 98% efficiency...
    4) no lube...

So if people dis Buells for their belts... then I say they are missing the only
note worthy part of a Buell... like if I had a Buell... I'd keep the belt and
    discard everything else...

  7. I have a better solution my friend Erik Buell hasn't though of yet... you know
I've been tinkering with belts a lot longer than he has...

  8. Is that three-pound difference just comparing the chain to the belt,
or is it comparing the chain and sprockets to the belt and pulleys? I
knew that a belt would be lighter than a chain, but I thought the
width of the pulleys compared to sprockets might offset some or all of
    the weight savings.

  9. What??? In the 80's Erik was making his own square 4 two stroke engine and not
messing with belts... in 93 as part of HD belts were a natural addition...

My first belt drive tinkering was 88...

  10. I used Gates stock steel belt pulley for the front but I machined my own rear
belt pulley out of Delrin which overall came out being about the same weight as
Honda's stock sprockets... so with sprockets and pulleys being equal... the belt
still saved me 3 pounds overall...

  11. Thanks for the clarification. I missed that you had used polymer for
the rear pulley. Nice work, by the way.

Surely, you jest. H-D's first belt drive motorcycle was on bike
    serial #1 in 1903!!

Actually, the first factory HD with a "modern" belt was the '80
Sturgis. As I remember the story, HD decided they needed to put on a
belt primary like the aftermarket had been selling for years (Primo,
Karata, etc). It had long been known modern belts reduced primary
drive vibration by as much as 70% and the longevity was almost twice
that of chains. They sent a bike to General Rubber expecting to get
back a primary only belted bike, but General delivered belts on both
primary and secondary, much to HD's delight. For several years only
the Sturgis had this belt option.

HD claims, "It isn't long before belt final drive is standard on all
Harley-Davidson® motorcycles". This isn't how I remember it. Seems
to me it was over a decade before "all" HD's get belts. The new
Evo Sporty's get 'em in '86 and the rest don't get belts until the
RUB-era 90's. 'Course, my memory ain't what it used to be. ;)

  15. Well duh. If you don't have any snatch then you don't need any lube.

And I kinda like a little meat on my snatch too. You can have that
    anorexic shit.

  17. My solution would be to change ratios on the gears connecting crank to clutch
which will alter not only your gear box but the final drive as well...
