Oh well... was bound to happen sooner or later.

Nah, deliberate ploy innit. The old hard cop, soft cop routine.

They have to practice on someone. You'll do.

Indeed, it sounds like they did exactly the same thing to you as they
did to me in '98, bending the rules slightly by not maintaining sight of
you, then offering a FPN. At least you got good value for money -
several years worth of speeding for £60.

It could so nearly have been 2 of us with points this weekend, but in my
case I'm grateful to both MattG and Lady Nina for pulling over to talk
to the policeman that was following us. Thank you both!

(I think I'm going to try and obtain some mirrors that work too.)

I knew there was a third bike just behind our group, but foolishly
assumed it was someone that knew us and duly hustled on just a touch.
It was after about 3 or 4 minutes waiting at the turning I realised
something was amiss... do I go back, don't I go back... it wasn't really
much of a decision, back I went as nobody deserves to be found at the
scene of a motorcylce accident wearing purple flares.

Anyhow, I spy them and there's a jolly bloke on a blue pan taking off
his lid. In for a penny and all that, so over I go. I get a rather
strange glance off him but nothing was said about my riding, the illegal
exhaust, or anything vaguely police related. And Matt got away with his
    illegal numberplate and endcan too.

Derbyshire bike cops are a pretty good bunch, generally.

I don't think that a helicoptor was involved, the display on the car
showed the 99.92 and 3.4 miles. Maybe they did time me past two objects
but since they were distant at the first one (when I first saw them they
were about a mile back) and I can't think it was particularly accurate
due to parallax. It's a puzzle and I'd like to understand how they did
    it; not that it matters!

I think I've had fucking good vfm, my last speeding endorsement was
    about 10 years ago.

I used to commute to Aldermaston, almost 70 miles each way, often
cruising at 120 for long distances. I'd say I've had my money's worth.

Or they could have standing orders to give fps unless the person is
taking the piss. Less paperwork that way.

This is why I like Friday 13th. If all these other people are busy
being unlucky on that day, someone has to collect the good. It might as
    well be me.

I could have accepted that had I been doing, say, 92 but 99.92 seems a
little too close to taking the piss territory...

I was. Fortunately I'd been chewing mints so they didn't notice.

  11. AIUI they use bridges for this - when you enter the shadow from the bridge
they press 'start', when you enter the shadow of the next bridge they press
'stop'. Since they know how far apart all the bridges (or whatever) are,
    it's
easy to calculate the speed. It's also a fairer reading since it's the
    average
over a distance, rather than at a single point like a camera gives you. So
    you
could, for example, nail it to get past a truck then back off to something
    more
    sensible.

Have you considered that the start of the 3.4 miles might not have been when
    you
    first saw them?

    Ginge says...
Heh, I clocked him at the junction turing off the A6, spotted the siren
sticking out the lower right fairing. Kept the revs low, to keep the
noise down, and kept the speed low.

That's the slowest ride I've had in a fucking long time.
Nothing said about the visor either.
Yeah, seemed like a nice enought bloke.

Absolutely, the start was when they joined the motorway, the junction
was before the peak of a hill, I saw them coming down the hill. They
said they'd picked me up at the junction in any case.
