Nice one - 250s are about right for your longer commute.
Quick enough to keep up with the traffic and agile enough for some
agressive city filtering. Good on fuel too.

I thought about buying a scooter for the winter, but I enjoy commuting
on the thou too much. It's quick, light, agile, narrow and even the
slightest hint of throttle leaves everything else for dead at the
    lights.

When the weather's too cold or mind-bogglingly shitty to bother riding,
I'll wrap up warm and take the tube.

  8. And will it only run flat out, or not at all?

Reminds me: I'll bring those pix of him on the XS250 along to Niall's on
    Saturday night.

Not the most desirable 250, I grant you, but economical, and as tough
as old boots. I had one that had done 50k miles and it ran
beautifully. And it's only to get me to work and back. Though Chimay
2010 on an XS250 sounds tempting.

Hmm wasn't that the ill fated XS500 which lost the cam sprocket cast
    onto the crank?
    Well yes!!

I would rather pull a dumpertruck with my bell end :)

    Are you sure ?.
It would be almost certain to bimble quietly all the way there and all
the way back at around 70mph with nary a whimper.
Your bikes OTOH do not have such a good record.

The early XS500 had a lot of probs until they revised the top end.
Balancer chains, camchains and cracking cylinder heads.

I had a late one a few years ago - the slab-sided thing. When I took
the cam cover off to do the valves, I was amazed at the engine. It was
incredibly advanced. Duplex cam chain, and valve arrangement very
reminiscent of an old Gixxer 750. Didn't make much power, though.

Well, 65, certainly. And not that much in London rush-hour traffic,
    anyway.

I was surprised how empty & civilised the M25 was this morning. The A3
up and the M23 down were a different matter, Certainly a lot of cage
    driving mongs on those roads.

Ah! Not just me then. I rode one about then, and it was the single
    soggiest motorcycle I ever rode.

And I've ridden some shit in my time.

I owned one for about 3 years as a rat-bike which I went to rallies etc
on. At one point I entered it in the Ultimate Streetbike Challenge run
by Superbike Magazine, and took it up the 1/4 mile at Santa Pod - I
even got a picture of it in the magazine when I had a letter printed.

It was a colossal piece of shit, even when standard and in good
condition. It was so bad that I think I improved it immensely when I
    ratted it.
