From the land that brought you Jeff Kennett and myriad other delights
comes this latest piece of stupidity

The Victorian Government will consider the reintroduction of front
number plates for motorcycles in the wake of a report that has found
speed cameras are effective in reducing road injuries and fatalities,
    the Deputy Premier said today.

    What, again?

It's been shot down every time they've tried it.

Yeah but this time there's a new you beaut hand held laser speed
detector camera gun that has the bean counters in Treasury salivating.

The prospect of getting all those !!DANGEROUS!! drivers off the road
for doing 1-10 kph over the posted "safe" speed limit cannot be
    ignored.

    Herald Sun August 18th

VICTORIA AUSTRALIA - Figures obtained by the Herald Sun reveal most
motorists were fined for doing less than 10km/h over the limit. More
than 1.3 million motorists paid almost $250 million in speed and red
light camera fines in the past year. That boosted State Government
coffers by $475 for every minute of 2010-11.

    ....

Of the 585,405 motorists caught by fixed speed cameras in 2010-11,
462,730 were fined for doing less than 10km/h over the limit. Of a
further 579,184 nabbed by mobile speed cameras, 465,640 were doing
less than 10km/h over the limit.

detector camera gun that has the bean counters in Treasury salivating.

If its that high tech it doesn't need a human readable numberplate. A
2d barcode is enough and it can be made small enough not to act as a
    meat axe in a crash.

  6. Why should that stop them? In the light of lack of rational analysis, you
    can do anything.

  7. Read the press report and you can clearly see that the exercise is mainly
for revenue raising and not one little bit for road safety
Pater Ryan needs to get his head out of the sand and take a look at the real
    world.

    Fifth attempt at posting...

This entire article is packed with misleading statistics which are
carefully arranged to project a point of view... which is not real.
Every single stat is either biased or misused. I'm surprised it's not
a comment piece. There are too many objections to list in the
    newspaper article.

    The report is here:
    http://www.audit.vic.gov.au/publica...ety-Cameras/20110831-Road-Safety-Cameras.html
The text string 'motorcycl' appears 16 times in the text, which is a
fair representation for a change, and it doesn't say anything very
    controversial about motorcycles.

To be fair, the report says nothing about front plates, it says they
need to look at the issue. The front numberplate idea seems to be in
the smh article only, even the pollie hasn't said anything too bad. I
love the closed thinking approach that since cameras only photograph
the front the motorcycles must have a front plate. As has been
pointed out before, they could simply photograph the rear... the only
problem with doing that is admitting to having made a mistake.

Heh, that one again. I've always believed there's only one way to reduce
the road toll, teach people to bloody drive / ride and not simply to pass a
    test.

I was lucky enough to do my open class licence through an extremely capable
and proffessional instructor. Not only did he insist on taking his students
out for lessons at night as well as during the day, he also took them on
highway rides. Add to that he took ex students through the then National
Safety Council advanced riding courses in Perth after they'd held their
licences for three months. Very few didn't do the course and I did it twice
myself, once on the 250 and six months later on the 750.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that what I learned there saved my life more
    than once.

I also did that course twice, several years apart. My wife di her
pre-licence training there. The instructor's name was John Neep. A
    great guy.

Unfortunately the NSC was discontinued (it was put together for
motorcyclists in the first place) and their excellent raining ground
is now part of ECU's car park.
