Oh the shame..... (away team)...

  1. Apparently they rolled off the ferry this morning, rode around a bit,
got lost and ended up following a french /cage/ until they were at a
    point they could continue.

  3. Well I'm pretty sure that if I'd been on the trip I'd be off and away
within a couple of minutes in the correct direction as I have been on
the last two trips I've done.
    <bites>
I don't read the Daily Mail
    I can read a map
I don't get lost in France
I don't need to travel in packs of 30
The fact TOG does the organising is just a bonus because I'm too lazy to
    do it myself.
Yes but you are only commenting on what was reported to the group.

    That you know about :)

Anyway, I expect TOG was propping up the bar early.

Just got back in..... the full details are:

Get of ferry in thick fog, TOG sets off and everyone else follows.....

As usual, TOG lost 90% of the following pack at the first junction.

Fuelled up, looked at map, Statto takes lead and we slowly make our way
through the fog into Caen for breakfast.

Another look at map over breakfast, and a plan is hatched to take the
twisty roads to the hotel. Map suggests that the D-road we are looking
for is just off the Caen Peripherique. It isn't. We do almost a complete
loop before stopping for petrol, and I get nominated to find out way out
of Caen as I have GPS.

So far, so good, the GPS leads us in vaguely the right direction.
Unfortunately, I was looking at the GPS instead of road signs, and
missed the sign to Caen airport. Doh!

Took the next turning, which apparently was the correct way, but GPS
said otherwise. Turned round and lost the following pack as they stopped
to look at a map....... they were eventually lead out by said Froggie
    cager.

I stuck with my GPS and found my way down to the hotel using D-roads all
the way without any problems...... (1)

    (1) Apologies to Spider and his missus...... passed them in Vire whilst
they were pouring over a map, but didn't realise they were with us....

I don't think anyone ever said it was - it's an *aid*, to be used or ignored
    as appropriate.

As it was, the GPS method of getting there worked fine once I'd decided
to completely ignore the roadsigns and let the GPS do the work for me.

IMHO, GPS is a _very_ useful tool when trying to find your way out of
    French towns.

As an aside, I _finally_ managed to find my way through Rouen on the way
back without getting lost. First time for everything. (ISTR it's my 4th
or 5th attempt at this one).

Took the Autoroute to Caen, then Rouen, then Calais.

It's the bit where the A13 continues on to Paris that I always get wrong
    - always miss the junction that takes you through the industrial bit of
Rouen to the Autoroute to Calais, IYSWIM.

eh? Follow the signs for "autre direction" and then look
for the sign to the next major town in the direction you
    want to go.

I've only ever had problems in Paris and that was because
they've shut roads. France is a really easy place to
navigate IMO. Mind you, I'd not object to a GPS unit.

  14. Actually, we were on the right road and the Frog insisted on showing us
the way down to the end of the street. We didn't want to offend him.

I know that, and you know that, and christofire for another knows that.

But when it came to it, all the other French Runners followed TOG at the
crucial fork in the road. *sigh*
