I think: "hypothetically, on a conference call between the White House
and the Pentagon..." is going to give the game away.

IIRC the Italian version doesn't say anything about it being deliberate
just the US troops hadn't followed procedure, hadn't been effectively
trained or briefed, were very tired, very jittery and were operating a
shoot first ask questions later policy.

That's the current (official, government sponsored) version.
The previous (unofficial, non-government) version was that
it was deliberate because the US "did not approve" of
paying ransoms, or some such thing.

Frankly, living as close as I do to the US border, I'm quite
willing and able to believe just about any stupid or evil
thing about them and their government.

    Ah, right.
I think, unfortunately, you may be very right.

Given the cultural differences between the two countries, a
disagreement about "appropriate speed" doesn't seem that odd to me.

I've done a moderate amount of driving in the US, and they all seem to
think that 75 is horrendously fast. Whereas the Italians only pass
thru 75 briefly as they change into third gear.

A colleague is moving back to the States, after 13 years in the ME.
Obviously pots of money tucked away. Is buying a Hog through the
discounted-for-military scheme, for delivery on his arrival home. We
were talking about I was trying to explain what I don't like about
them. Was recounting the Super Glide Sport that I rented, and said
"it struggled to reach 100mph; I find that unacceptable in this day
and age". He was aghast (despite having done a 6.5s 1/4 mile in his
younger days - though not on a Harley, admittedly).

    benblaney dot whatever.
I've got a couple of the fuckers.

The reasoning is that I don't want to lose touch with good people -
which is a risk after multiple job changes, PC crashes, lost address
books. The trouble with a yahoo or a gmail or a hotmail, is that
there's no search; if you forget someone's handle, you're fucked.

Whereas all anyone needs to do for me, is remember my name, go to
..co.uk and there'll be a mailto link on the index page.

MS Telepathy API. I think mine has the MS Apathy API though, as it
    seems to not care.
