I'm being offered an early candy red Z650, allegedly in lovely nick,
    for £1200.

44,000 miles, resprayed in the right colours (some paint lifting by the
filler cap, though), US import so 'KZ' on the panels, OE exhaust
(rechromed, but blowing slightly from the balance pipe - investigation
needed), rest of the chrome excellent, lovely engine, owner's had it
    for six years....

I might even get it for a grand. It would make a bloody sight more
sense for Chimay than the Morini...

    Oh, help.

  3. Ooh, I nearly bought one of them <counts fingers> 1,2,3...many years
ago. I had just left the guy pondering my "final" offer (which he
wasn't too keen on) when someone nicked it. IIRC, he ended up with a
    pittance from his insurers.

I'm gonna have it, I think. I've always wanted a Z650, especially an
early B1 or B2. Only the 400 Four, among bikes of that era, is as well
proportioned, IMHO. Just contacted the seller but he's away until
Sunday night, so with luck it'll be mine on Tuesday.

    Now to flog the Morini......

No it doesn't. Travelling abroad on a completely unknown and unproven
    SOB? not wise

Talking to the owner makes it sound practical. He's had it for six
years and 20,000 miles. And you can usually tell within a very short
time whether a bike will make it or not. That old Z400 twin, that I
flogged to petrolcan and then got nicked - that was one. ISTR Champ
drolling over that bike as well. Or the CB550 I bought three years
ago.... Or the R100RS a few years before that...

Or the Morini... no, as you were.

    My point in a nutshell.
Still, it's not an excessively long recovery to your pad

  10. HFM? For that mileage? Did you add on a zero?

  11. £1200 for a good original Z650 is cheap, and 44k is nothing for those
lumps. Nor is it a high mileage for a 30 year-old bike.

Really nice ones start at around £1800.

  14. AOL! I know what happened _last_ time I bought a bike from Neil.

Sadly, I'm going to have to SORN Black Kat. I'm up to my all in
assigators so no _way_ I'm going to have time to sort the brakes and get
an MoT before the end of the month. :-(

  15. I hadn't realised the misty-eyed old buffer market had kicked in on
Z650s quite so much. Christ, it wasn't so long ago I could pick one up
    for 50 quid.

To me, they'll always be SOBs and nothing will change that.

  17. Actually, now I think about it, that's two SOBs I've flogged that
    subsequently got nicked.
