Cool - thought as much as they actually gave me money when I did my return
    this year.

The online system really seemed to work very well - form done in 10 minutes,
money in my bank account within a couple of days.

    Can't resist:

So, what did happen about your battle over Antarctic tax allowance ?

You know, the one you won ?

I've had *real* problems with the bastards for the past three years, to the
extent that I've had to take out two bank loans to repay income tax arrears
resulting from their miscalulations. I'm on PAYE, but I have two sources of
income, which seems to throw their system into chaos!

Is it worth employing an accountant, if I'm not self-employed?

I thought you were going to say you won because the days in Antarctica (1)
    were longer !

  8. Sneaky buggers, sometimes. They just try it on to see if anyone's
    watching.

If you're on anything but basic one-job one-source-of-income, PAYE is
    almost guaranteed to be wrong.

You'd think the IR would give you a way of sorting that out with a
fairly simple set of forms, wouldn't you.

    DOH!
No. Spend 20 quid at http://www.taxcalc.co.uk/ and you're laughing.

I tried to sign up for that a couple of years ago.

They send you a userid and an activation code, and you have two weeks
to use the pair to set up the account online.

My userid and activation code arrived two weeks apart, and by the time
I got the second part, the first part had expired. Genius!
Didn't have a P45, tax code, correct address, tax return form, UTR,
any idea which was my tax office...the BBC have been taxing me at
flat-rate 22% for the last 16 months and I'd never bothered to sort
    it out.
A couple of phone calls later and it's all sorted and I've underpaid
by a couple of hundred quid - not a bad margin for error given that
BBC Payroll have been making it up as they go along!
If you're on > 34k, and I bloody hope you are at your age, in the
city, then you have to do a return whether you owe them, they owe
you or it's all square. Aren't they lovely!

On balance, I'd rather have to do a return than not, IYSWIM.

    Too Far-king right.

I'm a complete numpty with money and tax, so I pay an expert to sort
    it out for me.

You pay plumbers/electricians/mechanics for their expertise/knowledge,
how is this any different ?!

Mind ewe, the fecker's waiting for my cheque to clear before he sends
me back my completed return. C'mon c'mon the deadlines nearly here....

It's not as if he doesn't know what's in my account :)

    Cheers,

    Paul.

How much do they charge on average? To review accounts, incomes, whats
    taxable and what isn't.

I have absolutuely no idea. Is it based on the amount they save, the
amount you pay in tax, the number of incomes, complexity or what?
