As I flew back from SA watching District 9 on one of the in-flight
    movie channels.

I thought it was a very good film and I'm tempted to get a copy to
watch on a decent sized screen after the hardship of watching it on a
seat back tv where you tend to miss quite a lot. One certainty is that
it wouldn't have been shown on that route 25 years ago.

Indeed not. I would think it's worth watching on a big screen. I liked
it, but probably wouldn't watch it again.

enjoyable, certainly. Exploitative: definitelty. Taking the piss out
of saffers: for sure, and well deserved.

    (re)Watched 1/2 of "Hurt Locker" earlier - I think that's movie you'd
    also like.

  6. Watched it on the flight out to Chile. Brilliant film.

The other strong recommendation comes for Up, which is one of the best
animated films I have ever seen.

  7. I never got round to watching that at the cinema, but I see it's now
out on blu-ray, so I'll try to pick it up this weekend (even though I
won't have time to watch it).

I found it quite sad actually. More so when I heard the interview
with the widow of the bomb disposal fella who died in Afghanistan
before Christmas. The way she described her husband was the bloke in
    the film.

I watched the first 15 minutes of it on a flight (not from SA)
recently, then decided it was shite and I wasn't going to waste my
    time on it.

Oh indeed. When I say 'enjoyed' I simply mean that I thought it was a
good film. Not that I settled down with a few beers and some popcorn for
    a good laugh.

OTOH I couldn't really see much similarity between what I saw as the
lead character (with something of a death wish) and the widow's
    description. YMMV

Just the way she describe him wanting to go back and living for the
job etc. Struck a chord as I've heard that said of lots of guys in
that role. Obviously his personality and the personality of the lead
    character are quite different.

  14. The book is better but the film was suprisingly engaging.

  15. Probably, yes. But you're only nominating it because it has the best
    ever railway chase scene.

  16. I enjoyed that immensely, and I really didn't expect to. Hadn't heard
much about it, either. It seemed to escape most reviewers' notice.

I hadn't read any reviews of the film before watching it so I
certainly didn't expect it to be set in SA and it took me about 5
minutes to realise exactly how much they were taking the piss out of
    the saffers.

I doubt if I'd have found it as funny if I hadn't lived there when the
group areas act etc were still in force, or if I hadn't been on my way
home from my first visit since apartheid was thrown out but there were
loads of little digs in it that had me struggling to stop myself
    laughing out loud.

That bit is a piece of genius but it's actually one line that I like the
most - when Penguin takes his Feathers McGraw disguise off (a rubber
glove as a chicken comb) and a surprised Wallace says "It's YOU!".
