I rode up to the store and, on my way back, saw gas spewing out of the
carburetor. Turned off the gas and coasted home. It was the left carb,
on the downhill side of the bike. I don't use the center stand.

Took the carb off to see a hole in the case that goes all the way
through, roughly the diameter of a standard paper clip.

And I sez, what the diddly? It's a Bing flat top with aluminum body.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what caused this?

I got some gas tank putty yesterday. I'll take the thing apart and clean
it, then stuff putty in that hole with a standard paper clip.

I just had the clutch plate replaced last month. Crikey! Will this ever
end? First it was the fuel lines. Then the clutch. Now this annoyance.
It's like the bike is cursed. I'm gonna have to take it to a gypsy.

I'm not sure you should give a cursed bike to a gypsy. He might have his
old lady put an even worse curse on you.

On later models look on web between top and socket, on engine side.

  9. Sounds like a casting defect or a crack. Since you
describe it as a pinhole, I'd guess casting defect.

Just to make really sure, we're talking about a
hole in the float bowl casting or the carb body
proper ? There are a couple of little holes on
the valve end of the intake passage that you really,
really don't want to fill in.
Other choices might include J. B. Weld or epoxy or solder
if the putty doesn't hold. You also see carbs on eBay for
maybe $100 a pair, depending on size. If it's an R65,
the good news is that they're small carbs and hence
not something anybody wants for a hop up.
The more you can do yourself, the better. Good on ya for
    tackling the carb problem.

I put new floats in late last year. No, this is a casting flaw, a
pinhole in the carb body where no pinhole should be. It never ends.
    IT NEVER FUCKING ENDS!

The bike is at the shop now. I have a spiffy F650 to ride for a day or
two. It's only $5600. I'm seriously considering it. It's not an airhead,
not a boxer twin, more like a rice burner with a side of Bavarian
sausage, but it looks futuristic, goes fast, handles well, and sounds
    like a sewing machine.

What year and exact model is it? The F650 has been around for years
now, in a variety of styles, high seat models, low seat models, Dakar
models, Enduro models and even street fighter models recently.
It has a high-quality Austrian Rotax engine in it. Aprilia also made
their version of the F650, as I recall.

Aww...they fixed mine so I had to give it back. Mine handles better
anyway. That thing wanted a lot of input to keep it turning, and I'm
lazy. But you're right. Problem child needs to go.

I had a loaner F650 a while ago that was chain driven. This one was belt
driven. I'll go look at that SV650 right now, thanks! I like Jetsons

    what the diddly?

I feel yer pain, yes. :(

First, my bike gets stolen...now, you post this *sigh*

O, how offensive, barb!! A gypsy...!! I hope they take ALL your $$$.

Why, you should just ask one of your Scientologists pals to make it
    "clear" for you. ;)

PS Don't you have more of your whimsical awful books to flog??

I don't have any 'whimsical awful' (is that even English?) books to flog.
What I do have is a short book of horror stories, two of which have won
awards. Hope I cleared that up for you. Like my new sig file, bitch?
    It pwns Scientology!

And what is offensive about gypsies? Historically, palm reading and
curse removal has been, and still is their stock in trade. Oh, bodywork,
driveway sealing and roofing as well...

We're in a Bay Area newsgroup, and bound to run into squalls of
Political Correctness. Some people are offended by the term "gypsy,"
which may or may not incorporate a belief that people of this ethnicity
tend to defraud those outsiders with whom they do business. I believe
the currently favored term is "the Rom," as one of the concentrations of
    these people is in Romania.

I find the obsolescence of ethnic identifiers amusing: although one
wouldn't dare use the terms to describe the intended beneficiaries of
these groups, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People and the United Negro College Fund are still very much in business.

The identification of ethnic groups with vocations is also infra dig.
notwithstanding my patronage of a Chinese laundry and an Arab grocery
    when I lived in SF.

No matter what agency you find to cure your bike (perhaps a shaman at
Sycuan, now that we've voted to let them expand their operations), I
hope that it is healed of its tendency to run up your expenses.
