As if the V11 hasn't been enough trouble, I've recently started
noticing the Quota's top gear is whining under load at certain speeds.
40-55mph is loudish and there's a distinct piercing peak at 65mph, but
the noise almost completely disappears at other speeds and the other
    gears are pretty quiet.

Now, 5th's whined for as long as I can remember, but I rode the bike
withoput earplugs for the first time in ages recently and it really
was loud. I have a horrible suspicion it coincides with the tranny oil
leak increasing and the gearbox oil level being abnormally low when I
    checked it last service.

So, the answer I'm looking for is: " they all do that, Sir". I suspect
I'm not going to hear it, though.

Note that apparently lightqweight-engined bikes use a similar gearbox
but with straight-cut gears, so some of these models are known to be a
bit noisy. The Quota's basically a 1000S motor in a tall chassis.

Heh. Quotas are very quiet as standard - apart from the usual tappet
noises - and thre isn't much in the way of aftermarket cans for them.
I don't 'do' loud cans in any case.

Tell me about it, I have been trying for ages to get a straight through
crossover and some better pipes for the Cali, and only ONE company in
    Italy do them.

I suppose a bike with a low annual output doesnt get the same amount of
aftermarket goodies that a bike thats made in its millions.

No good. Not good at all.
They don't. At least my 2 don't make any noise at ~70k and 242k (yes that's
    right).
If this is the same box as the older round barrel engines, I'd have it apart
while you've got it out of the bike. There some special tools required but
the genuine manual has good enough photos of them o fab your own. You'd
curse yourself if you lost a bearing (or worse!) after another few hundred
    miles.

"Lightweight"?! Can't be talking about a Guzzi surely.

AFAIK all the 5-speeders are pretty similar.
The Quota's still in one piece - it's the V11 that's in bits.
I'm pretty sure it's not a bearing - just the gear itself. It's only
that gear and it's also very high pitched. I will probably do an early
oil change though, just to check for debris.

I'm actually considering just outing the bike, TBH. While I enjoy
doing my own maintenance, I seem to have spent half of Summer fixing
or servicing bikes and I've come to the conclusion that four is just
too many. It's just unfortunate that I probably won't get much for it,
especially as I've just replaced the brake pads all round and the rear
    brake master cylinder.

I even considered outing the YZ and another road bike, and buying a
decent enduro instead, but I just love that two-stroke buzz. Besides,
the only other road bikes are the Aprilia, which, when I'm in the
mood, is an absolute hoot to ride, and the V11, which owes me big
    time.
    All things are relative.
