oh FFS... any spannerers around?

  1. well it was about time my luck started to change I spose.
Today whilst heading up the M40 back to Preston to continue packing the
house up, my VS decided to run a bit shit[tm].

So I eased right off, found my way to the hard shoulder and pondered
whether or not it really should sound quite like the big bag of spanners
    it was sounding like :(

Got the bike home in a van courtesy of my old man. No thanks to all the
fuckers who passed me on the M40 around Banbury area despite my thumbs
    down signal. Mumble Mumble.

So anyway, it's hard to describe the noise it makes now, other than:

    Loud. Tappy. Rattley. Scary. Expensive.

I know the square root of **** all about engines, so anyone with more
than half a clue want to share their thoughts? It's a 800 Vtwin with
approx 25k miles if that's useful.

Anyone with half a clue and spanner experience want to offer their
services in exchange for beer or favour in lieu or less money than a
shop, I'd really appreciate it. The bike is currently safely tucked up
    in the High Wycombe area.

If it started suddenly without the oil light coming on first, then
that'll most likely be your camchain tensioner. I know nothing about you
particular engine but with luck it will be an easy fix.

  3. Thanks Gyp - that's almost inspiring some confidence back in me :)

I certainly didn't notice the oil light coming on. It has oil. The light
does work when turning ignition to on, so I guess they're all good signs.

Pip will be along in a minute to either agree wholeheartedly or
completely disagree and in doing so break your spirit.

When the tensioner went on my <oh God I wish I could use a small font>
Yam XS400SE US Custom </oh God I wish I could use a small font> many
moons ago it sounded absolutely like the whole mechanical world had
ended. IIRC, a "new" tensioner from a breaker cost about a fiver & that
    was it. YMMV of course.

Don't listen to them; it's far more likely a piston (maybe both) have
worked loose and dropped into your sump, wrecked your gearbox and taken out
the crank. And that's if you're really lucky!

Doesnotcompute was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
Does it have _enough_ oil in the sump?

  10. Presuming "oil in the sump" is the same oil as one would usually check,
it doesn't drink oil, it wasn't that long ago changed. The oil level is
between max and min on the sight glass - but nearer max.

But surely that's because you do not understand the concept of shame
anyway, not because the XS400SE US Custom hasn't featured very highly in
peoples all time top 5 SOB lists
