Do you have a sound card with a line-in? I'd be surprised if it
    hasn't.

I'd also be surprised if there wasn't some free recording software for
    Mac available.

I've not looked at it this way. I suppose it is mildly amusing... if
you don't have to live with it!

It's an iMac so no sound card. Ditto for my iBook.
I have that bit, OS X comes with the recording software.

At least there is now one stable person in your family.

I've got a sound card in my iBook G4, just no line in, only a 3.5mm
socket that can drive headphones and speakers.

If you want to call that a sound card, then my iBook G4 has a sound card
    too.

Well, it's not a hard disk is it?

Number one son was *exceedingly* annoyed that we conducted the petrol
in the microwave experiment when he wasn't around.

    Christ.

Take digital camera. Photograph bookshelves. File images.

    Done.

Then, if you want to, you can shove 'em all into a database at your
leisure, or maybe 'outsource' it to someone at a convenient time.

At the very least it gives you a list of what you've got.

A proper sound card would have more I/O than just headphones.

Good grief! Basic household stuff like the above does not get
financial reward. I use the stick approach - 'get those jobs done or
TV and net access will be lost until they are'. We did have a rota
system for a while but the argumnets about whether emptying the
dishwasher was comparable to getting the washing in from the tumble
    drier defeated me.

Well, there's no pocket money free from responsibilities so I'm happy
enough to cough up for this. As a child I did **** all around the house
[1] so I kind of feel it's their right to do **** all around the house
    too.

[1] Although I did spend a fair amount of time working on the farm...
which I don't have so they don't do this. Hmm... guess they got off
    light.

Heh, that's rather like saying a proper hard disk is a scsi one[1].

    [1]Which it is. ;)

    re cataloging books
Maybe when my visitor goes back to work I'll do it to pass the time.
Yes, absolutely. On a rare weekend when I don't have the kids and have
no plans for visitors or visiting then I spend it in the library,
always with the intention of restoring some kind of order. I get side
tracked though, pick up a poetry anthology or Brewer's dictionary of
phrase and fable and two hours or more have gone by before I realise.
May take you up on that one ta, if the lure of a bar code scanner and
    collectorz doesn't get to me.
