    Well, these fuckers are.
I really hope so. The good news (there's good news?) is that that nice
Ginger Gentleman had made noises about patching the exhaust before it
rots through. I declined on the principle that I didn't want to remove
the exhaust. So now he gets his Big Chance! Woo-hoo!
Good. It was you and that **** Hog that talked me into this. I blame the
    pair of you.

Aaahh, that brings back memories. About 35 years ago I spent a couple of
hours holding a BSA Bantam engine upside down and shaking it to try to get a
washer out of it that had dropped in. Having spent a couple of days very
carefully stripping and rebuilding it I was damned if I was going to tear it
apart again. I finally succeeded but my arms ached for a day or two
afterwards. Wouldn't fancy trying it with a Z1300 but perhaps you could
hold an engine-shaking party. With, say, 6 people it would only be about
    70lbs each.................

Just a thought - do you know anyone who has access to a fibre optic camera?
It might help locate the thing if it is lodged inside instead of at the
bottom of the sump. If you are VERY lucky then, you might be able to hoick
it out with one of those flexible claw-ended thingies.

  6. Any room to get a four pronged grabby flexy tool down there? If you can
peer down the camchain tunnel and see it, you stand a good chance of
    getting it.

Oh, cheer up, you miserable bugger. If you look at the pictures here:

    http://tech.zn1300.com/z1300-deep-sump-pan-comparison.html

you'll see that the sump pan can be unbolted, although you'll have to remove
the exhaust first. Drop the oil through a sieve first, mind - the little
bugger might just come out on its own.

    I love you, little monotreme,
I love you full and well,
I love your little turned up beak,
    I love your special smell.

I want to kiss you, monotreme,
I want to kiss your face,

You are a very, very, very nice man; I don't care what everyone else

It's 29mm diameter. It's still in there, trust me.

I wish it was. Then it wouldn't have fallen through the

If it's not attached to the Dnepr, it's not a big enough chair.
Indeed. I was a little surprised myself. The cam acts directly on the
shim, so I guess it has to be a reasonable size.

  14. Drain the oil first. That might bring it out - if it's big enough to get
through the drain hole. Then take the sump off. Then, if it's not in
there (it probably is). just ride the bike.

I mean, the chances are the shim's lodged somewhere where it can't do
any harm. If it does escape and cause carnage in the engin, it's
probably less carnage than you'd cause trying to strip the lump down.

You silly silly silly sod. I refuse to feel even the slightest twinge of
    a guilt trip.....
My solution would deffo involve a flexi dentist mirror and flexible
retractable claw. Failing that a little fibre endoscope. I might do this
before messing about with the sump and encouraging the blighter to bed
deeper. A good engineering come non destructive testing shop should have
one, quite common now for bore examination, you can probably hire the
    things.
