Oh bugger.

  1. Hog's derision has shamed me into hoiking the cam cover off the
BlingMobile and waving feeler gauges at what was revealed[1].

#4 and #6 inlet valves are completely (as in < 0.0015") closed up
    (should be 0.002 - 0.006").

So now I have to make a special tool to get the existing shims out, then
go shim and gasket shopping tomorrow.

Then I have to worry about *why* they've closed up.

I knew I should have paid some twat to do this for me.

[1] BTW Champ, the Californian emissions crap did have to come off to
    get the cover out.

  2. It's a piece of piss to do the shims on that.

    Shim tool.

Hah... Can you sleep well thinking about all the valve seat regression?
Worth taking the head off while it's in so many bits - what's the
    compression like?

Californian? Means it's been running lean as a lean thing and there's
probably a good bit of valve overheating and burning to think about...

Give them a little extra clearance from standard and check them in
another 1000 miles after they've settled back down... or not.. as the
    case may be.

I had the camchain tunnel blocked. Nearly well enough to stop the
fucking cunting fucking bastard fucking cunting shim falling into it.

The non-magnetic fucking cunting fucking bastard fucking cunting shim.

    I feel physically sick.

It would appear I am about to learn how to remove an engine from a
    Z1300.

Now please do excuse me, I'm going to cry.

Angry? Angry? I am so pissed off at myself that for a few seconds after
it happened turning the bike upside down and shaking it would have been
    a feasible solution.

    Unfortunately, that passed.

I will now investigate the possibilities of dropping the sump with the
    engine in the bike.

    I bet it won't. I just bet.

Bad one. Non-magnetic? Are you sure you're sure?
Torch, mirror on a stick and a bit of luck...

Otherwise an oil drain and inspect waste oil hoping it's come out
    bringing the shim with it...
You big girl - it's things like this that are sent to test the stiff

Don't make me come over there and kill you. Just don't, OK? There was
one small, unnoticed gap. The **** homed in on it like an Exocet.
Yep. Checked and double checked with another one of the wily little
    fuckers.
Nope. Can't see it at all. And it's big enough not to miss (see below).
Unlikely. These are hairy-chested man-sized shims, 29mm in diameter.

I had to drop the sump off my Bandit to look for a little bit of metal,
had to remove the exhaust too. In the end, I found the offending bit of
metal behind an inlet valve spring. :)

  11. One useless statistic I remember is that a Z1300 engine weighs about
340lbs, or the same as a Suzuki X7.

  12. Is there a way of getting one of those really sticky sort of Sellotape
squares on the end of a stick[1], poking it down, and hoping you can
catch the thing on the sticky bit?

[1] Obviously you want to make sure the sticky thing is well attached to
its stick unless you want to start a collection of foreign objects
    inside the engine.

Maybe worth a try. I think there's enough oil kicking around to make
    that a non-starter. But worth a try.

Looking on the bright side, you can spend the long summer evenings
enjoying the inside of your engine. Perfect time for that expensive
    rebuild...
    Snap out of it man.

Best bet is to knock a hole in the sump with a hammer, fish out the
shim then fix the hole with some form of magic.

What about one of those grabber things that open up when you press the
top? Dunno what they're called, I've had one in my toolbox for years.
Ever since a 'helpful soul' managed to drop a screw inside my engine.

Don't rule that out; surely the lower frame rails would take the weight.

Anyway, I'm surprised it doesn't have hydraulic adjusters like proper
American motorcycles to avoid all this fannying about.
