On my way out to see friends last night come round a corner to find a Fiesta
had just left the road, flipped and hit a tree sideways hard. Driven by a
young lad with two girls in the back.

I have no real first aid training and this was the moment I was kicking
myself. The feelings of total inadequacy as I'm trying to make safe, sort
out and then comfortable whilst someone else was on the phone to the
emergency services relaying instructions to me. I was extremely grateful
when a retired nurse turned up shortly after and took over and gave me other
things to do whilst we waited about minutes for the bone wagons to arrive
[1]. One of the girls died [the drivers girlfriend] whilst we were there,
and according to the Janitorial types who just called me, the other is
critical and unlikely to make it. The driver was completely unscathed.

So, any recommendations for any first aid courses that are open to the
public that don't cost a fortune? I don't think it would have made any
difference in this case, but as this proved, you never know what's around
the corner and in the event of anything like this happening again I want to
    be much better prepared.

[1] Rural location on A4030 - 15 minutes for 2 ambulances and three fire
engines, presumably all from Bicester. Plod about 40 minutes FFS

  2. Local St Johns do excellent courses and would have details of any
    other courses local to you.

    VERY expensive.

While I typed that, it made me even more sad that we live in a world
such as we do today, where one is scared to offer help when it's
needed for fear of getting sued.

    <sigh>

It's time to leave the country.

There are many accidents were the injuries are not that severe, but if NO
treament is given, they become so.
I'm still thnking of doing a more bike orientated one - things like the
correct way to get a helmet off for instance - it's somethign I'd like to
know, even if it (hopefully) never ever has to be used.

  5. Seconded. My 15 year old daughter's a St.John cadet sergeant and the adults
who teach her are a good bunch.

  6. not necessarily. as well as the first aid training they do they also
offer 'good samaritan' insurance. something like £12 for a couple of
    years.

I got my work to pay for mine.

  9. Yes. You're complete absolved from any effects if something goes
tits-up. It's called Good Samaritan situation, and it's legally
    enshrined.

  10. People who moan about bikes being fucking dangerous tend to forget that
cars driven by young twats are too - and when they prang, they usually
    take someone else with them.

  12. Severe bleeding (unless you consider a torn shirt used as a tourniquet
    to be "equipment").

Vomiting without being put in the recovery position

Cessation of breathing requiring artifical respiration.

    Bleeding from various arteries.
    Punctured lungs.
Boat loads of injuries which require the recovery position.
    Heart attack.

I imagine there are loads actually.

  14. Out of interest, what do you do to someone who's suffering a heart
attack? Apart from rifle through their pockets?

You can carry a "Police Aware" sticker to give yourself some privacy
whilst you take advantage of the dead and dying. :)

Bleeding? Pretty common I would think.
    Shock? Blocked airways? Stopped heart?
    Well, yes.

    Totally agree, .
Agreed. If there hadn't been a nurse [1] on tap and there would have been
two dead. However, if it helps until the pros get there I'm all for it.
Good question, but personally I couldn't not do something in a situation
like that for fear of being sued.

[1] A complete star, probably in her mid 70's

Erm - A4030 - know it very well - whereabouts?

Oh, and I've been in similar situations - luckily no fatalities - but I
understand what you mean about feeling powerless to help... :eek:/

This is going to sound very stupid - I'm not exactly sure - I think just
east of Middle Barton - one of the switch back dips
