Oh arse - Computer down

    ****.

A while back I was fumbling round trying to plug my headphones in to the
front of my computer, when I hit the wrong hole... I noticed that
plugging a headphone jack into the USB port resulted in the machine
    instantly shutting down.

Last night I did it again, only now the bastard won't restart. I get
disk lights, etc, but nothing on the screen at all, no BIOS checks, no
    nothing. And no beeps. Arse.

Ah well, I was due an upgrade anyway. Dell's Indian call centre have
    just been my friends...

  2. Some people never learn, do we?

Did you get that 'oh no not AGAIN' thought?

I know I do, especially when the tarmac is on its way up to meet me.

Oh yes. I was a little miffed. Then the **** wouldn't restart and I was
*very* miffed. Luckily the HDD has survived.

It's probably only the motherboard you've killed... Check the CPU and
Memory in someone elses PC, then if it's good £40-50 worth of
motherboard should have you back up and running.

Yep. Like I said, I get disk lights, fans, and so on. But him no boot.

Remarkably easily. The headphone socket is 4mm from the USB port, and
they're both on the very bottom of the front panel. Put the machine on
the floor, and it's no trick at all to hit the wrong one.

    Sounds familiar-ish.

A similar plugging in tale is the reason I'm now posting from a
spanky-new P4, rather than my flaky old Athlon.

    Similarly, the HD survived.

On the Optiplex range and I suspect the Dimensions it's a bloody
awful bit of design. You have to lift up a top hinged panel and
lie with your face on the floor peering up to see the sockets.

Lucky escape... my second string box has just keeled over, seems to be a
    dodgy h/d controller and/or memory.

Of course, there was ample time to backup everything on it,,, did I do
    it?

    Answers on a postcard, please.
