Terminated my Orange mobile broadband contract today. Replaced with a
3Connent PAYG dongle. Orange was slow and regularly dropped.

Don't know what to do about voice ( Orange E71), it's reliable enough but
the hold for CS is looong and then rather hopeless. Do the other 3 actually
    do anything better.

    Handset? qwerty I like

New Sony Vivaz Pro looks the part. Nokia E5, N900 (Symbian)
    Samsung Omnia Pro (WM)
    Sony X10 mini pro (Android)

Or does one say feckit and go iPhone4

I called Orange two weeks ago and got put through to the off-shore call
centre. First thing that they did was to ask for my phone number and
some security details despite having already keyed-in that stuff in
response to the robot voice. Anyway I tell the bloke I want to go from
monthly to payg and he puts me through to another person. Next bod
answers and he's clearly somewhere in the UK and has been told by
off-shore I want to quit. When I explained what I wanted his initial
response was aimed directly as the off-shore bloke in terms of pure
Nige. At the end of it all I got a £15/month contract but reduced to
£7.50 with twice the call minutes, four times the number of texts and
unlimited Internet access. They also threw-in a phone. I am trying out a
Samsung S5620, but in all honesty it's fairly crap and will end-up being
    a backup.

I know someone who got the HTC Desire but purchased it outright for £400
and got a payg from giffgaff. It's a cheaper route than 24 months on
    some excessive contract.

Unless you like battery life measure in significant fraction of a single
day, don't even think about it.

Good camera but that was the only thing I liked on it.

I have a HTC Desire and Fiona has an iP4 - of the two I prefer my HTC as
it seems more configurable, expandable, open source apps and -
importantly - it doesn't need iTunes get stuff on and off it.

....and with Vodafone it can used a tethered modem

The downside (with both) is the short battery life - push mail kills it.

I don't really want a BB any more than an iPhone4.

HTC Desire is actually more expensive to buy at the minute than it was a
few months ago (due to HTC having problems getting the OLED screens AIUI).

A colleague has just recently bought a Samsung Galaxy and seems pretty
impressed/happy with it. Bought it online from overseas SIM free.

I've just bought an Ericsson T39m to replace my heap of shit Vodafone
    work phone.

It was the most solid and basic phone I could find with Bluetooth for
    less than 30 quid.

    Anyway - iPhone. YKIMS.

On O2 PAYG, £10pm gets you 300 free texts and unlimited data(1) and the tenner
    gets used for calls.

    (1)well 500mb
