I'm actually after a DVD Writer with Hard Drive, to replace the video
    recorder.

I've seen a Pioneer system that has a firewire port to connect it to
the PC, with an 80Gb drive (for up to 16hours of film (best quality)
and 80hours (normal quality). £700 ish.

Thomson do a similar system without the firewire port for about £450.

I'm still looking for other systems though...

No scart socket on the sky box? If you've a scart socket, connect it to
a TV capture card in a PC. Works great for me.

    Heh, see my reply...

Mined Ewe, I've not got the Sky+, but it works for me with Beeb, ITV,
    CH4 and CH5.

Ahh, so presumably you'd not be getting the ability to record one
thing while watching another? Seems to me that this, and having
multi-channel feeds to drive two or more TV displays, is really what
    would make additional investment worthwhile.

For recording stuff off the TV I have a funny old thing called a
'video recorder' which works perfectly well TYVM.

Cab secured a place in history by writing:
Well, yeah, you can do that if you're happy with a conversion from RGB to
something lower in quality....I was kind of thinking the OP meant directly
capturing the data from the internal drive, thus maintaing the original
quality, 5-1 sound etc and not having to record in real time. Equally he
may just want to archive TV to watch later, in which case your approach is
    more than adequate :)

Just cause you can physically connect doesn't necessarily mean the
two will talk to each other. Verify 100%.
Neither of these have an advanced EPG though, which once you get used
to it you can't live without.

    Not live, no.

But the box is clever enough to work out if you want to watch two things
off (say) Sky, and you've told it to record both, it'll find a repeat
broadcast (within 28 days) of one of the shows, reschedule itself to
record that, so it gets both shows.

In the end you just end up watching recorded shows - which is great
cause you can FF through all the bloody ads :)
Two Tivos, one upstairs, one down, connected by network, each Tivo
can see all the programs the others recorded and play them back.
Essentially they merge into one, but obviously each has its own list
of programmes or series to record.
But you have to "programme it"... ewwwww. And it doesn't record
things it thinks you might like, and doesn't have 150+ hours
    recording capacity. Urgh!

Think going back from you gixxer thou to a CG125.

Or watch two channels on two different TVs? No, thought not. Ah well,
    I'll give it a miss, I think.
Well yes, but I'd never actually get round to watching it. It's very
different watching a repeat of Poirot "because it's on" from choosing
to watch one you recorded earlier. I'd never get round to it, because
    I could watch them anytime.
Eeurgh. What a horrible thought. Networking just to watch TV? It'd be
cheaper, and a damn sight easier, just to get two old Sky boxen with a
    split feed from the dish.
Like you don't have to program you Tivo? Of course you do, even though
it might be easier. The problem for me would be actually deciding in
advance what programs I'd want to watch. Generally our viewing
selection technique consists of sit down, put feet up and telly on,
flick through channels until something watchable comes on.

The frustration arises when there's bike racing or F1 GP on and she
    wants to watch something else.
Not at all. In use (i.e. when watching summat) the two both perform
the same function in a similarly efficient manner, although the tape
needs rewinding and stuff, it's true. So more like going from an
ZXR1100 'back' to the GPz1100 it's modelled on, or the original Z1
    _that's_ modelled on.
