Considering how far along the road of Alzheimers he was, I imagine the
    transition was barly noticeable.

  5. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the

Has anyone thought the great man in the Cold War was Gorbachev?

General Secretary of the Soviet Communist party prepared to admit they
got it wrong and began to introduce changes to the economic and political
    systems?

Or those dissidents in the hardline European Stalinist states that were
prepared to organise, at great personal risk to them and their families,
during this period to spread the message and instigate change?

Reagan was just the public face to the US economic system and its
    inherent self-protection mechanisms.

I've got mixed feelings on him, tbh. The making friends with the
Ruskies was quite pos, but he had to: because his economic policies
were fucking disastrous and he couldn't afford the cold war any more.

He left with an *enormous* budget deficit because of his massive tax
    cuts.

And he was a **** to Grenada and Nicaragua, neither of which were any
    of his fucking business.

That I don't deny. It - and other things - bankrupted the yanks too.

  17. The US had also lost Big Bird in orbit, their sooper dooper spy
satellite. The replacement for it blew up during launch. They couldn't
see over the fence anymore and had to talk to the Ruskies to find out
    what was going on.
    I agree.

    I did not know that.

I didn't know anything about the space race until I went to Kennedy
Space Center. The Russians beat the yanks in a lot of things, it
seemed to me (except the man on the moon). Bet that galled.

I'd rather like to go round it again, in your company, Mick - let me
know if you're out that way and I'll meet you there.

  19. Great place!
When the wall came down and the Yanks went over to laugh at the Soviet
space program and they came back with their tails between their legs
having found out that the Soviets were streets ahead of them in basic
rocket engines. Their kerosene / liquid oxygen units were so far advance
to anything the US had, they now buy them and have replaced the engines
on all their Delta rockets and have significantly increased the payload
    capability.
Last time I was over (years ago) was because I was a guest to some
launches. I got to see the shuttle from the VIP area on the NASA
Causeway. :))) Plus a Delta and an Atlas.
    There you go!
