Off the air

  1. Due to a particularly stupid piece of fuckwittery[1], I've been
    without a password[2] to my Brunel account since Wednesday night. So,
    no e-mail, no Usenet until Monday at the earliest. :-(

    [1] Forcing me to change from UNIX mail to some Mickeysoft system[2]; turns
    out that was for POP3 and IMAP users only -- I'm neither.
    [2] For some reason this needed my password reset; it was sent by e-mail[3].
    [3] Needless to say, it didn't arrive[4] -- have people forgotten that e-mail
    is not a secure and robust message delivery system[5]?
    [4] Well, would _your_ spam-screener's heuristics allow a mail through that
    had no subject header and just a single cryptic word as payload[7]?
    [5] They wouldn't resend it[6], and asked if they could send it to my boss;
    he hasn't received it either[4].
    [6] I established some communication via CERN yesterday, after it also was
    inaccessible Wed night/Thur morning due to a widespread power failure on-site.
    [7] Although to be fair to the spam screener, I suspect the mail in question
    was sent _after_ the redirect was put in place...

    Well it's a good job they never had email and spam-screener heuristics
    in Dr Strangelove because "Wing Attack Plan R" would never have got
    there, and the film would have fizzled out.

  4. As I sent you some email during this period of email tranquility should
    I send it again next week or will it, after being queued up in
    cyber-space, be spat out on Monday?

  5. Mick;
    To be sure, send it to -- I can log on there (with
    some difficulty; they are having more file-store problems this weekend).
    Or (there, your own personalised address! :)
    tho' I check there less frequently.

  9. Having gone over and confronted the Hell-Desk in person, I now have
    a working password again. I'm sure you don't have to guess what the _very
    first_ message in my redirected mail-box was...

  11. I'm still near King's Lynn.

    I replied using the email return address each time.

    Basically the answer was yes please to anything you have on CD.

    With a big thank you.

    And an offer of a 'free-be' holiday somewhere warm, sometime in the
    future. Canaries?
