It's morning. I drag myself out of the haze of a dream where I'm
riding the ZXR in the snow. Apply crow bar to teenager and go and hide
from the small chirpy one who by some strange genetic twist actually
likes the cold grey hours before noon.

But I can't hide for long, the school run beckons. Unless (until?) a
side car outfit is obtained it means the knackered golf has to be
coaxed into life. In blessed silence the eldest is deposited. The
ritual exchange of 'have a good day' grunts over, I'm left to face the
horror of cheerful excited about birthday girl alone.

'Mum' <said in an interrogative, you will reply fashion>

    'ug'

'you know that song? <sings tunelessly> Riding along in my
    automobile?'

    'ug'

    'I thought of this...

    Riding along in my Blingmobile
My teddy [1] beside me at the throttle
Cruising and spinning the disco ball..

but I don't know how to end it, I'll have a think at school'

and with that she hop, skipped and jumped out of the car, leaving my
heart bursting with maternal pride at her first filk.

Now I'm stuck trying to think how to end it, ample supplies of
caffeine and cigarettes aren't helping the process and I'm off to work
    so over to you lot.

[1] On hearing me say 'I've got a touch of Mr Eaton's teddy' I had
    some explaining to do...

... as you mark another year off the countdown, eh?
You've not lived, mate. It's what Snowy used to do so well - taking a
well-known tune and subbing one's own lyrics to it. There was a site
called SP30.com that carried some examples ...

Well, I sort of inferred that from the context. But I've never heard
the word before. Where does it come from? Hang on, I'll google...

ah, ok. It does seem to be rooted in Science Fiction, tho, certainly
    according to http://www.filk.com/filk101.htm

  7. At school, we used to sing:

    Riding along in the Batmobile,
Robin beside me copping a feel.
Can you imagine just how he felt
When he couldn't undo my utility belt?

    A nice card, arrived yesteday.

And a bottle of gin (Bombay Sapphire) from a woman at work today. And
taken out to lunch, with a bottle of champagne [1]

[1] Cafe Rouge send me a voucher for a free bottle of bubbly every
year. It would seem rude not to take advantage.
