This would be "soul searching" in the sense of "running away as fast as
you can; no, faster than that" would it?

  2. Ok, rang up and asked. Apparently, the engine runs OK. It needs a
battery but the main problem is that the clutch bellhousing emits a
nasty noise when the engine's running unless the clutch is depressed -
they reckon it isn't rideable at present.

So the swingarm & gearbox would have to come off in order to look at
the clutch. If recent car experience is anything to go by, I suspect
that it could be the gearbox.

Looking at my various Guzzi books, it's not entirely stock, but that
    doesn't bother me.

Ho hum. Not quite what I was looking for, but bags of character. Time
    for some soul searching.[/QUOTE]

Sounds like output shaft bearing to me. Anyway, leave well alone.

    On Mon, 13 Dec 2004 22:53:52 +0000,
    I hadn't thought of that.

The Quota did once start producing the most unbelievable grinding
noises from the clutch housing, which turned out to be the starter
motor drive contacting the flywheel, but I'm not about to gamble 750
    quid to find out!

Well, I had an attack of Lust, but I'm better now.

I am most certainly a disciple of the Way of the Gentle Art of
Bodging. In fact, I was actually doing some official bodging as part
of my work today, which made a pleasant change.

Unfortunately the headlight connector blocks are fine, it's the actual
bulbs themselves that're the wrong shape.

I have tried 35W halogens (they don't seem to do a higher wattage in
this fitting), and they do help a bit. In fact, there's still one in
there now, but for some reason, the filaments are set too far back in
the bulb and a certain amount of modification to the bulb is needed to
get a remotely decent beam pattern.

The other problem is the size of the lamps: they're only 13cm (about
five inches) in diameter. Apparently there are a number of Jap 400s
with lamps this size, so that might be a source.

I ddi see one Quota whose owner had fitted spotlights: I'm not sure
that these can be used with dip beam, though.

Pretty close. Picture the scene: blondish woman with recently-bought
car decides to top up the screenwash. Unfortunately, it's dark, the
car is unfamiliar and the screenwash and power steering reservoir are
very close to each other. Quite understandable circumstances, really.

As the liquid overflows almost instantly, she realizes her mistake.

Now the silly part: she can't get hold of me on the phone, so decides
to drive round anyway, rather than walk or cycle, thus thoroughly
pumping the liquid round the steering system.

  7. Ouch. Permanent damage or simply a flush-and-replace job?

    I have a T3 and a Quota.

I put cibie lamps in the quota and can now see where I'm going.

The T3 is a good bet at that price if it has wire wheels.

  9. But not if it has a fucked gearbox.....

    It's not a bad price as a breaker anyway but if it has wire wheels;
bearing carriers and cush drive (which it most certainly has) then that's
    ~£350 alone.

....and if it hasn't? Working geraboxes are fairly common and not /that/
    expensive.

  12. Fairy nuff.

But 750 quid plus maybe 250/300 for a decent box....

Assume another 250 quid for whatever else needs doing to it. Invoke
TOG's Law (for every fault you see, there's one you've missed) and call
it 500 quid. You might as well go out and buy a decent T3 straight off.

OTOH, if it isn't the box, then this one's a bargain. Expert assessment
    is necessary.

Yours is a 1000, then? Did you have to mod the fairing in any way? I'd
like to leave mine as stock-lookig as possible.
    It does.

No noticeable damage - yet. Unless the seals don't like the mixture, I
suspect that the most likely outcome will be a shortened pump life. I
will give it a couple more "flushings".

You can't just flush the entire system, unfortunately, there's no
drain plug as such. I suppose I could've disconnacted the steering
rack at one of its hose connections, but that wouldn't drain the rack
    itself.

Instead, I've been extracting contaminated fluid from the reservoir,
re-filling with fresh, then running the engine while wiggling the
    steering, then repeat ad nauseum.

I didn't have to hack the fairing, But modified and beefed up the carrying
bracketry. Unbelieveable difference, the cibies are just superb.
If the wheels are nice - buy it! The reg-rectifiers are rebuildable using
bits from maplins, I have a mate who is an expert with Guzzi elecs if you
    get stuck.
