"Descano"? Never heard the word before, nor does it apperar in the
dictionary of the Real Academia Española (http://www.rae.es/)

Tradition of marking death points on the road does however exist.

Ops! That should be "descanso", but once again, didn't know such
interpretation nor does the DRAE do.

For clarity, I quoted it rather than wrote it.
Having looked again I have it as 'descansos - resting places'

    http://webpages.charter.net/dnance/descansos/
What term is used in Spain? It seems descansos is the spanish american
    usage.

To be sincere, never heard a specific name for it in Europe.

Sure it is, but not applied to those places with flowers after a death.

Concerning the URL above, before Barcelona Olympics a large hotel was
built (Hotel Arts) and the anglo-merkin company behind brought to the
city a full team of English speaking construction workers. May be they
were more productive than the locals? Well, not much, first thing they
learnt was the holy local law of mid-morning half an hour "descanso"
    for a sandwich :)

When I learnt Spanish at school the first two phrases we did were "The lift
doesn't work." and "The workers are on strike."
