In the last 12 days I've had 1 day off work, 4 of them were long hard
days at a trade show where I was on my feet all day and dealing with a
constant barrage of customers demands from morning til night, and then
on to the hotel to complete paperwork until I flopped into bed. The last
3 days were spent following up leads I picked up at the show and going
through what our company can do for our customers etc with everyone I
met, sometimes twice a visit as new people were dragged in to the
conversation. I am physically and mentally wiped out, I desperately need
to sleep for a long time to allow my body to catch up.

So why am I awake and grinning like a wanking Jap at 8am on the first
day off I've had in 7 days?

There's the promise of a 100 mile ride on Hog's RD400. Bring it on :)

I spent yesterday promising myself a couple of hours spent thrashing
the bike if it was dry today.

All I need to do now is find my tinted visor because the sun's come
    out to play as well.

    "100 miles" + "RD400"

    <fx[1]: gets out calculator[1]>

Just the one set of spare pistons & four plugs should cover it.

[1] Which is actually an fx, as it happens.

    A Casio, I take it?

    <Shuffles feet awkwardly.>

Did anyone else have calculator races at school?

I had, IIRC, a Casio FX-110, and most of my schoolmates had FX-
120s, a better model which replaced the FX-110 about a week
    after I got it.

We used to have 'calculator races', in which everyone would
start the same calculation at the same time. The favourite was
the hardest one our calculators could do, 69! [1].

Predictably enough, when a load of people with FX-120s did it,
they all finished at the same time, about 10 seconds. But my
less advanced FX-110 was about a second quicker.

The results were the same every time but we still use to do it
while waiting for the maths teacher to arrive. I think it was
the high-tech thrill of seeing a machine do something so complex
    [2].

And it was more fun than actual maths, of course.

    [1] "Factorial 69", ie 69 x 68 x 67 x 66... 4 x 3 x 2 x 1. Which
    comes to 1.71122 E98.

[2] This was the Seventies. "The decade when everything was
    crap."

Well that's added another item to the list of things we thought were
good but with hindsight were pretty crap.

The only good things about the seventies were going on a three day
week and the roads being less crowded.

My first calculator was one of those tiny Sinclairs with a display
that needed a magnifying glass to be of any use. Saying that, after
being used to slide rules and log tables I thought it was the dog's
    bollocks.

    http://www.nvg.ntnu.no/sinclair/calculators/scientific.htm

"The Sinclair Scientific, launched in August 1975, was a highly unusual
calculator. It displays only in scientific notation - 5 digit mantissa,
2 digit exponent. Because of the way its processor (a custom chip from
Texas Instruments) is designed, it relies on reverse Polish notation.
This unusual method of mathematical problem solving meant that, for
instance, to add 2 and 4, one had to enter 2, then 4, then the + symbol.
    There was no = key."

You need an 'Enter' key instead.
