    Good one, more tolerance.
I reckon UKRM is coming down on the side of the smoker in this debate.

Conran's restaurants allow smoking all the way through - there's no "smoking
or non-smoking, sir?" AFAICR. They just have carefully-designed
ventilation, and smoke from smokers' tables goes straight up into the aircon
    system.

    The cigarette girls rock, too.

No. make them non-smoking and send the non-smokers there to drink so we
don't have to listen to the whining fuckers in our smokey den.

  4. And while we are at it lets hermetically seal the smoky
pubs until the throwbacks inside expire of nicotine poisoning..

I don't hugely mind smoking in pubs, but I'd like to see a ban on smoking in
the street and train stations etc.
I hate it when it's a lovely fresh morning, I'm walking to the station or to
work or somewhere and some bloke walking in front of me is blowing smoke all
over the place and I have to breath it in.

I suppose I could hold my breath. But that's not much fun.

Maybe why young Sweller works on the southern region - lots of nice

Further to last nights funnies, this is actually my preferred option.

I feel soooo warm and fluffy knowing that the government is spending all
my money protecting me from the products they licence.

Diesel fumes are a serious health risk, hence all enclosed spaces where
engines are run up have extraction systems. There are also requirements
for locos/DMUs to be shut down in enclosed stations and only started
    prior to departure.

Section 7 of the H&S act provides for me to remove myself from an area
where I believe there is an imminent hazard to my health or safety. If I
feel that excessive engine fumes may be injurious to my health.....

So yes, I can have a working environment free from significant diesel
    fumes.

We used to be mixed traction at Brighton. Oh, for the happy, carefree,
    days of the Western Region.

I was shifting nearly 40g a day. Making sure I always had two packs of
blue rizlas on me rang a few alarm bells.

I found giving up, physically, very difficult although I was bored with
it and wanted to give up.

Cold turkey didn't work. Zyban did. (2+ years)

Youd have thought a non-smoker'd be able to overtake a chimney at a healthy
    brisk pace.

However, if we're now talking about banning pollutants from the air
outside, lets make a list of all the other carcinogens they'll have to ban
the emission of once they can no longer blame smokers for the cancers of
    the non-smokers.....

I hate it when it's a lovely fresh morning, I'm walking to the station
Not at the moment cos I'm recovering from a broken leg. :)
Heh - I didn't say what I thought was logical! Just a personal preference -
exhaust fumes and stuff don't really bug me, despite them being unpleasant,
but tobacco smoke just seems to hit a raw nerve.

Just electric now though isn't it? Do all the Thame Slink trains still
have an extra million quids worth of kit on board to switch from
    overhead to third rail?

Yes, and they still need it.

Its quite a cost effective solution to the differing power supplies.
Midland 25Kv AC units can run on 750v DC SR routes providing
inter-regional connection without the need to change trains or the
duplication of traction units, a cross Thames link if you like.

For the ultra dull a quick guide to BR multiple unit numbering....

    319 201
^ first number indicates type of MU traction

1 - Diesel mechanical/hydraulic, usually engines below solebar
    2 - Diesel-electric, usually engines above solebar
    3 - 25Kv overhead electric unit
4 - Southern Region 750v DC third rail
5 - Midland Region 750v DC third rail

The other numbers mean stuff too but I've managed to bore myself....

Wasn't there a plan to replace the third rail on the Brighton-London
line with 25KV overhead some years ago? It obviously came to nought.
It is. I used to quite like the old electric motorised coach units they
used to run on the local lines down there. Newhaven Harbour to Seaford
to go to the pictures at the flea-pit! Happy days.

I also remember stopping the train at (IIRC) Tarring Neville Halt, by
waving at the driver to get him to stop. IIRC the halt had been closed
for years, but they would still stop if you waved hard enough.
