Ah, your work has the opposite philosophy to our IT gurus. They buy the
most expensive PCs, usually brand name ones, that are under specc'ed and
which are struggling within 18 months to run the apps that require a CPU
3 generations ahead of what we currently have.

Our current PCs are IBMs, P3 900s with 256 MB RAM running Windows 2000.
Lotus Notes Ver 6 was just installed on them at work. Has turned them
    all into XTs.......

So why wade in then ?
    No I wasn't, I answered a direct question(statement), but given you seem
to have reading problems I guess I shouldn't be disappointed you missed
    that.

Nope, sounds like your "IT gurus" and "my work" are on
perzactly the same page. I'm the one who 'over specs'
    the pooters like mad.

I'm still forever getting grilled about the computers
that I specify being $1000-$1500 dearer than the ones
that the dickwads from downstairs spec :-/

No-one seems to notice when their's last for a year
and mine last for three tho :-/

    G, such is life

We're just replacing *some* PCs at a clients - P3 800s with 128 MB RAM
running XP. And they were trying to run Visual Studio .Net (!!!)

They're only replacing a third of them ...
