    Hiya Peoples.
I know this is probaly not the place for this question, But I know
there's alot of knowledgeable people in here.
I've just setup a router for network sharing & file sharing. I have a
problem in that my wifes pc running XP can see & acces my pc & files, but I
can't access her pc or files, My pc is running ME. When I open "My Network
Places" on the ME machine, I get a Scripting error with the option asking
    if
I want to proceed Yes or No. It doesn't matter what I pick, All I get is a
"My Network Places" window with nothing in it.
I thought it might be a compatability issue between XP & ME, Or a
security setting on the XP machine.
The access to the Internet works fine on both PCs.
    Any Ideas?

ME sucks big kahuna as a network client of anything (and yet I have seen
people using it as a server....)

However, sound like something wrong rather than incompatibility. Can you
uninstall and reinstall your LAN adapter and networking software? (sounds
like an OS software problem, not hardware).

If you can do that, try the adapter in a different slot. That can fool the
OS into thinking it's a new adapter and reinstalling the networking
    components.

Also a few runs of windows update installing all the critical updates can
work wonders for all sorts of issues.

    Coupla things to check:

Both PC's are members of the same workgroup name (usually 'WORKGROUP' for XP
and 'MSHOME' for ME). They should both the same.

Are both PC's getting DHCP from the router or are there any manual IP
    addresses?

Are you using any other protocols? (IPX NETBEUI)

For local PC's installation of a 'non routeable' protocol like IPX or
NETBEUI can simply the connection between PC's.

    Just some ideas...

  5. XP has encrypted passwords, and I don't think ME does, just run network
setup on the XP box, when you get to create network setup disk, do it
and run the executable created on the ME box, that might fix your problems.

The encrypted passwords wouldn't stop you being able to browse in network
    neighbourhood.

Why not just try comp.something.something.networking. You can probably tell
your story about the Tarago on the GOR without shit getting heaped on you
    there too :p

Windows Me is Windows 98 with eye candy. 95/98/Me don't offer
an opportunity to 'log on' except at startup, and they don't
allow you to make SMB/CIFS connections as anyone other than the
    'logged on' username.

Win NT/2K/XP requires a username/arseword to let you browse
stuff, sometimes even the IPC$ share (which enumerates a bunch
of other stuff, shares, etc) requires a username/password.

You must make sure that the username/password pair that you
'logged on' to 95/98/Me with exists and is enabled on the
    NT/2K/XP box.

A potentially more rewarding approach might be to drop the
lemon that is WinMe in favour of a Win2K install. Don't bother
going to WinXP unless you have the time to strip all the crud
out of it using nLite (http://nuhi.msfn.org/) or similar
(a non-trivial but rewarding task IME).

ME is the worst OS ever. If you can't even open My Network Places then there
is something wrong with that PC. I'd fix that before trying to get a Network
    working.

I've worked out a way to access the PC running XP from the machine
    running ME.
I right click on "My Network Places" & then on "Search for Computers",
Type in the XP michines name & the ME machine finds it, I can then access
the XP machine. I know it's a round about way, but it works for me.
    Thanks everybody for your help.
BTW, I've never had a problem with running ME until I've tried networking.
And very few give ME praise.

That sounds like a netbios browse master problem. The simplest way around
that is to install IPX on both PC's. That will make local LAN stuff work
without dependencies on TCP/IP which can be flaky from time to time in ME.

I do plan on installing XP on the ME machine as soon as I change the
VooDoo Banshee 3DFX video card, which XP doesn't like.
I found this out when I did install XP on the ME machine some time ago &
had no end of video driver problems, I come back to ME after I read that XP
& VooDoo 3DFX cards aren't compatable. A mate had the same problem with a
VooDoo3 3DFX card. He went baught another video card & it fixed his problem.

I can remember Win 2.0(which was basically a task switcher) and Win3.0
as well as 3.1, but I didn't think there was an actual release of Win 1.0
