    Gah.

    ok,

    1) forks, do I need to take the shiny bit out before I can take the
fork seal out ? I've got the circlip & washer off.

    2) Rear spindle. Does it really matter which way it goes through the
    wheel ?

    3) 20 year old single piston Tokico caliper, do the pins push out (i.e.
not threaded) once the retaining clip is out ? [1]

The HBOL is sketchy on all the above ;-)

    Ta in advace

    Paul.

Firstly, it helps to loosen the end caps before you take them out of the
    yokes.

There is usually an allen key bolt at the bottom of the fork that holds
the damper rod in that you'll need to undo. First though, make sure
you've got a new set of washers for the bolts and a bottle of thread
    lock for the thread.

Once you've got the bottom bolt undone, you usually use the fork leg as
a slide hammer to get the top bush and seal out... if it's fitted with a
    top bush.

Clean everything up really clean, lube the shiny bit with some fork oil
or ATF but before you do, wrap the end of the fork in some PVC
insulation tape firstly taking the lower bush off, so that the seal
    doesn't get dammaged.

Also, when putting the top bush / washer / seal in, be careful not to
dammage the shiny bit. A length of plastic pipe the right diameter used
as a drift is best for this.

Failing that, an old seal with the outer diameter ground down a bit so
it won't get stuck in the top of the fork and an old large blunt flat
blade screw driver with the end sheathed in a disposable craft knife
blade protector, hit by a hammer wrapped up in duck tape. Worked for me.
    :)
I always put the nut on the other side to the exhaust, if you've got two
exhausts take yer pick. Although I always put it back the way it came
off, which ever way that was.
Dunno, can't remember last time I worked on one of those.
    Yep.. that'll be normal then.

I'm off to see a Matchless G3L of 1954 vintage this evening

    Pic here:

Well, I did on the BBird, and after my chat with Champ on here, who
said servicing on a bike was as easy as a car, but everything being in
minature, so I serviced them both.

So oil and filter, check, pads, sorted, But I can't even see the plugs
on the 12R, let alone change them.

Under the false tank lie demons personified, wiring and guff, so i'm
    not going in there.

I'll stick with my SOB fettling I think, and asking random questions on
    here :)

    Cheers

Not necessarily. You can take out the spring and fill the forks with
    oil. Then compress...
This should force out the seal, but a lot of force may be required to do
this and it may not be pretty if you succeed.

    That's rather nice.

Email me at the usual. The one I post with is valid.

Even more vintage/non runner would be equally good too, the whole idea
is to immerse myself in as much muck, rust and filth as possible in the
    garage ;-)

Thankfully my 3 SOB's are fulfilling this admirably ATM ..

Started the Silver Superdream the other day - cor, it ain't half rough
    and rattly ! :)

    Cheers

I'm off to see it at 7pm. Believe me, you're better off with one which is
    already in reasonable order. :)
