Numberplate recognition cameras in Cambridge

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Power Grainger, Oct 2, 2003.

  1. The police have been out in force on the main routes out of the city
with their new 'numberplate recognition cameras'. Van in a very
obvious place 1/2 way down the road, with cars strategically placed
further away in either direction ready to follow if necessary.

They reckon this is to catch stolen cars - can they use the data for
anything else? Indeed, can they store that data for any length of
    time?

It's not that I have anything to hide (ossifer) it's just I don't like
the constant erosion of our civil rights. In this scheme, it seems to
me that everyone is treated as a potential criminal, rather than
    'innocent until proven guilty'.

And is the ROI really worth it, with 6-8 manned vehicles out on one
    street 'on the off-chance'?

Every force in England and wales has been given one from central
    government
It doesnt store data - it reads the number plate and compares to the
    PNC
No - there is no facility to store vehicle details

Used in good locations it can reap *massive* harvests. I know in
Surrey they tend to turn off the excise licence expired marker as they
cant cope with the amount of "hits" - they have enough to deal with
just responding to stolen vehicle, written off vehicles, used in crime
    or such markers.

Hi Steve and welcome to the group.

The practice here is to post at the bottom. Have a read of the 'New?' site
    in my sig.

What sort of numbers? Percentage of vehicles scanned show a marker?
    What markers are there?

Speaking of which, I passed a van of some description parked up in
Camberwell today; M plate Iveco minibus with blacked out side windows, and
two small windows flipped up either side in the back doors, each with a
    camera pointing out of them...

Hordes of plod, both on foot and in cars lurking in all the nearby side
    roads...

Tax / Crim ANPR, or speed trap?

The former, I hope, as I was in the SOD.

    Given! And nobody was suspicious?

But it does have an interface with things that do store data and it is
HMG who is ultimately in charge of those.

    Excellent.

For my sins I am Part of an ANPR unit in Scotland. The normal motorist has
nothing to fear from ANPR but if you use your car for a dodgy purpose, your
car is stolen or if you don't tax or register it then you will be stopped.
The data read by the computer is dumped unless there is a hit on the reg no.
Overall it is a useful tool to catch travelling criminals and those who cant
be bothered to tax their vehicles like the rest of us law abiding souls.

There was a proper police jobbie on a bridge over the M5 this evening,
with a plod stood by it pointing some sort of glorified exposure meter
at the oncoming traffic. I'd have given him a cheery wave if the little
white van from the National Canine Defence League hadn't decided to pull
and emergency stop in front of me.

I can hear the conversation in the police ops room now:

"TOG: no tax..... Simian: no tax.... Sniper: no tax.... Phil Drury: no
tax.... Sweller: he *never* has any..... Guy: no tax.... Just another
    normal day, Sarge."

The Older Gentleman was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
They'll only learn when they get dragged out of bed in the middle of
the night and banged up because their movements have been recorded
together with everyone else's and a car sporting their numberplate has
had its course plotted past the scene of someunspeakable crime. Like
being in the same pub when someone made a joke about Blunkett's guide
dog. Or protesting outside Downing Street against ID cards.
