that's the thing. From my place to LHR *can* be done in about 90
minutes. But last time, it took 140 minutes. I like to build in a good
comfort zone so I minimise the chance of missing the flight.
well, as long as you weren't paying personally...

When I travel on the Eurostar, we get fully flexible business class
tickets, which takes the edge off the danger of missing the train.

I did miss a flight from London to Belfast once, last flight out on a
    Sunday evening.

I was still living and working in NI at the time, so on the Monday
morning the call went something like: "Hi, it's me, I'll not be in to
work today because I've woken up in the wrong country".

    Champ says...
Having switched from an ex nationalised industry to a global outsourcing
company the work ethic has certainly changed, from one of a planned and
reasonably well resourced workload to a almost constant state of panic
trying to meet deadlines which have been set by somebody who has no real
understanding of what the customer is trying to achieve.
No here, if you say no they just get somebody in who says yes, regardless
of weather the objective is achievable.

Well no, but I did think I might have to explain to my manager... who
in the event never even questioned my expense claim.
So do we, normally, but the travel office obviously have some special
deal with BA, whi we were using as we specifically needed to be in
London for a Ski Club thing and I specifically wanted the proper
fold-flat seats they have, for the return overnight flight.
    Heh. "Typical oirish", they thought.

Well, yes - but that's no reason for you to throw reason to the four
    winds and join in :)

Sure, seen that too. But, over time, you will get a reputation for
    being right.

    Ker fucking ching.
The normal one I see is someone says no, then gets the reply - fair
enough, but just do the best you can.

I am so so glad to have put all that behind me. I am sure that most of
my work related stress was the direct result of incompetent management.
Now I are one at least I have the satisfaction of knowing exactly who to
    blame.

I'd be shocked and saddened if there weren't.
    I thought it might.

  10. As in "I'll be at work 12 hours in a day and *still* only do 40% of the
work that someone in the UK can do in 7 hours"?

Or at least thats what it seems to me..

  11. No - the total opposite. I still expect courtesy from people though -
so even the good guys tend to let me know (as opposed to asking
permission) what they are doing. That's just good manners.

  12. I can't see one on Ebay and Amazon are out of stock. This is my life -
I continue living while at work - I probably interact with more people
while at work than I do out of work and I don't dislike what I do.

I ride my bike, I play on my PC's, I play the Piano and still find time
to go for a quick pint on a Friday night. What am I missing? Serious
question - why seperate work and 'life' aren't they all parts of the
    same thing?

If you manage all that, then fair enough. I'm fairly sure that if I
was working your hours, my outside work relaxation would consist of
little more than collapsing in front of the TV. You're obviously made
of sterner stuff - we'll not see your like again.

  18. Heh... Well it's fair to say that I don't get time for a lot of TV and
I don't do as much riding the bike or other things as I'd like to do,
but being at work isn't a punishment - if I really didn't find it OK
I'd leave and find somewhere else to hang around all day.

We shouldn't forget that for a very large number of people, there is
    very little choice.
