ah - the short commute would make a difference - I've never had a job
in an office that was less than a 40 minute each way commute. Except
for when working from home, when yes, I tend to put in 10 or 11 hour
    days, just because "it's there".

You would hate it here. No one is *ever* on time for meetings. I've
never spent so much time in empty rooms. Though I have stopped going
back to my desk to double check my agenda.

It doesn't happen only on the railways. I wrok in an after school
club. All the clubs in Reading except ours allowed the staff to go
when clearing up was done but be paid until 6.30. At ours, we used to
have to stay till the allotted time or be paid for the actual hours
done. I had to explain this to casual staff, who then sat about doing
nothing and sulking. As did we, but at least we were used to it. At
last our manager relented. Casuals now beg to come to our club because
    the atmosphere is so good.

  11. I expect you would if you expect it all to be one way. People who
graft and help out when needed can do what they like. People who are
there marking time can **** off.
We don't - we have certain hours in the day to provide a service and
must have minimum cover at all times in that period.
Agreed - and mot just meetings - IRL if someone can't be arsed to show
up on time for anything they are a ****.
That's what I do - If by 10 mins of the start of the meeting the
attendees who promise to attend haven't bothered I'm not wasting my
time waiting for them. I'll sort out myself what we were discussing
    and impose actions on them.

  12. Hence the rider about the clock-watchers. I've got some bloody good
people working for me now, and if they want time off, to come in late,
go early or whatever, as long as they let me know so I can cover for
    them, I'm more than happy.

They more than give, so I make sure they get something back.

  13. Why? I do about 70 hours a week every week (plus travelling). Have
done for a long long time with occasional bursts of activity leading to
100 plus hour weeks. You just get used to it.

  14. usually it's an excuse to get rid of a wastrel if they are late, but
proper performance management should deal with that before it becomes
    an issue.

Over five or six days? At five, that's a 14 hour day, and ISTR you
having a long(ish) commute, which must leave you with *just* enough
time to eat and sleep. Doesn't sound much like a life to me.
Really? 100 hours over six days is 17 hours a day, and I just fail to
understand how anyone could do that. I know I couldn't do it for more
    than about 2 days.

Are you hourly paid? It's about the only reason I can see? The
other person I know who works that hard is a former ukrmer who is
climbing the corporate ladder solely to earn enough to provide for his
    kids.
I don't meant to pry, by what needs drive you that hard. And, there
are alternatives to spending time with the wife.
