NSW toll roads to be E-Tag only in 2005

The Liberal Party has never sold a road because they have never owned one.

  3. The problem here John is the system is really setup for regular users like
yourself. I'm highly unlikely to get 4 etags for our fleet of two bikes/two
cars, even the cost of one wouldn't be worth it for the amount we use the
tollways, it's just not cost effective (besides NSW don't do an etag that
they approve for use on a bike). And it's not that I avoid tollroads by
using alternate routes, I just have no need to use them in my normal travels
(M4 toll around 5-6 times a year, that's it). I guess I'll just have to
start avoiding tollgates from now on.

I am surrounded by toll roads (unfortunately) and on an average day I would
go through 4-6 toll booths, because they also have coin booths we have to
slow to 60 kph in the e-toll lane (for safety reasons) with the coin booths
removed it would remove a traffic choke point and allow the traffic to run
    unimpeded.

I have flaggd the issue of the unsuitability of the current e-tag for bikes
a number of times with the Federal and QLD Governments however they do not
seem to be interested in developing the technology for bikes. I suggested
that bikes should be free but that recived a very icy responce.

I think you will find it will be a part of registration in the near future
    for all vehicles.

According to the RTA website, RTA tags cost the following

    $40 security deposit {for each tag}
$60 initial toll payments (for each tag)
$80 automatic debit every time your balance falls below $20 on each tag.

I'm not 100% sure about the $60 pre-payment of tolls for each tag - I
think this may be a furphy on the web site, especially if you have
multiple tags on the one account - but I could be wrong.

But I still wanna know how in hell you're suppsoed to use them on a
bike. The tags {in NSW} are required to be within a percentage of a
certain height - where do you put it if you're on a bike? Stick it to
your helmet? The must have fashion acessory for riding in Sydney?

  8. The other question too is what happens if the etag *does* get wet and
shorts out? Are you responsible for keeping it dry and working? Etags and
bikes are a whole new kettle of fish, as they're not a fixed item as they
are in cars. What's to stop someone else "borrowing" the tag? The CityLink
etags are active rather than passive, and the system relies on the driver
hearing a series of beeps to determine if they are being tolled correctly.

What is NSW proposing? I am already aware that toll charges for
motorcycles in NSW are the same as for cage drivers. CityLink at least has
proposed a charge that is half that of caged drivers - once frontal
identification numbers are introduced and tolling of motorcycles possible.

The RTA admits they don't have a bike-suitable etag.

Their current attitude is that bikes can pay the extra for going through
the gates without a tag, and if the tag is damaged by water or heat,
    that's the rider's problem.

The MCC has been working on this for 2 years with the RTA.

It is very dependent on exact bike shape, and rider size and shape.

All you can do is try. If you put it in the jacket chest pocket don't
fall off - more than one person has been hurt to "medic!" level landing
on big blocky things in chest pockets. (and even if it's just a bruise
or cracked ribs, they hurt!) As an added incentive to stay upright, the
etags are apparently prone to breaking into large sharp chest-piercing
    chunks if they break.

Tank bags and top boxes appear to work for some bikes, although if you
put it where you can't see it, be sure it stays oriented properly.

Where ever it is, keep it dry and cool. They don't like heat or wet
much, I presume the idea is they can get very hot inside a stopped car
but by the time they get to the tollbooth temperatures in the car will
have dropped enough to allow the electronics to work. This may not work
for a very hot day in a black tankbag behind a fairing.

If you have a valid tag and it doesn't register, I am told they just
match the number and debit the account. I don't know if they add a
    processing fee, best ask them.

They gave part of the Tullamarine Freeway in Melbourne to Citylink. They
didn't own it then either, the public did. Then the public had to pay
Citylink for the right to use it.

I see you are talking about the Victorian Government at the time.

The Liberal Party and the Victorian Government are two very different
    things.

There is no difficulty at all in photographing the rear number plate of
motorcycles. They just choose not to. The difficulty they have is
photographing the rear number plate of other vehicles.

I only ever use the two lanes which were there before Kennett gave Citylink
the rights to charge for travel on it. Why should I pay for extra lanes which
    I don't use?

True, but it means that all the tolling stations need two sets of
cameras, both forward and rear facing.
This is a lot of extra cameras just to photograph motorcycles.
Its a question of expense and return.
Much better to force motor cyclists to have to fit forward facing
number plates , which is what the Vic Govt is trying to do.

I thought it was supposed to be user pays. If someone else is travelling in
the lane citylink added, why should I be charged?
According to your prior post they only own the rights to the bitumen :p
