  1. NSW Summer Blood Challenge 2003/2004

    December 1, 2003 to February 27, 2004

The Summer Blood Challenge is the biggest single event in blood donations
in NSW. More blood is donated by riders and Police than in any other
    event.

The Challenge, held over summer is a friendly competition between the
NSW Police and Motorcyclists to see who can make the highest number of
    blood donations during this time.

Since the inception of the Summer Blood Challenge, the NSW Police and
Motorcyclists have worked together to save approximately 55,000 lives
with blood donated during the Challenge.

Summer is often a difficult time for the Blood Service, as many regular
donors are away on holidays, so the support of the NSW Police and
Motorcyclists over this critical time is invaluable.

    HOW TO DO THIS

    (1) When you give blood, make CERTAIN that your donation is recorded
    against the motorcyclists tally

    (2) Go by yourself

    (3) Organise a group (e.g. Bikers Australia run to Liverpool Blood
    Bank on Dec. 6).

    (4) visit www.donateblood.com.au for more information.

    (5) Register online for yourself and make an appointment, or call the
'phone number to arrange a time to bring a group.

    (6) Encourage other riders and riders' friends to participate. Bring a
BIG group, or several small groups.

    (7) Think about this. You, or someone close to you might have to draw
    from the Bank. Do it.

    (8) Remember to nominate the Motorcyclists' tally.

Blood donors save lives. Blood donors help motorcycle accident
victims, as well as other accident victims, premature babies, cancer
patients, haemophiliacs, burns victims and other seriously ill members
    of our community.

An estimated 80 per cent of Australians benefit from blood or blood
products at some stage in their lives, however only 3% of Australians
    are regular blood donors.

Saving lives brings out the best in all of us. Anyone can save lives.

All you have to do is nominate who you would like to support - the NSW
Police or Motorcyclists when you donate blood between December 1, 2003
    and February 27, 2004.

Please call 13 14 95 or visit www.donateblood.com.au for more
    information.

  3. I was going to suggest that James do the plasma thing, but was sure you'd
    beat me to it!

    Cheers

I thought O-Pos was the universal donor, and O-neg a universal
    recipient.

    zebee
    - O-Pos, never been asked to do plasma.

O+ here too. I tried the plasma-thingo once but they couldn't get a decent
vein in my left arm so they gave up (I was a right-arm whole-blood donor).
I'm too unhealthy now though so the count stopped at 67.

They no longer want my blood as I lived in the UK 1985-1989.
The mad-cow years overlap by a few months. So I'm off the possibility
    register.

Maybe I should just go there and ask for my non-donation to be added to the
    motorcycle tally.

  12. Eh? I have never heard of anyone being knocked back to do plasma. You do
know that you still do give red blood?

  13. As far as I understand it, you have to ask.

  15. Nice excuse, it was the "other" question that really tripped you up, eh?

    Yep. My brother is AB+ and I'm O-. He's a universal recipient and I'm a
universal donor. Bit like our lives really - he always got anything he
wanted, and it was usually at my expense! (I'm the younger brother - so all
you Freudian types can make of that what you will).

I got the same answer when I offered too - go figure. So it's just one unit
every coupla weeks for me. But they did ask me if I'd go on the bone
marrow register which I agreed to. Never been called up, but I'm there if
    needed.

    Nice one Centurion.
My older brother is AB something and I'm O-neg. But I know why and so
    does my dad.
