Maybe being your homeland the thing was a cast off , common with the
pommies to do stuff like that as according to the definitive site on
A40's it should have been mechanical only before 1950 , maybe they are
wrong as I personally couldn't say when they were new

He bought it in Perth in 1957. I suppose it could have been older.
Vehicles didn't have manufacture dates on them, and the licence
probably denoted the year it was first registered.

Hydraulic brakes were not universally adopted even in 1959. American
based cars eg Chevs, Hudsons Fords Holdens etc could be mainly
shitehouse unassisted hydraulics, Pommie shite boxes were generally
mechanical. Upper crust Pommie and European could be vacuum assisted
hydraulics if your were prepared to pay the price.

Hard to be sure , Fords had oil brakes since the early 1930's
I remember putting thirty six brakes on my Model A in high school
Being a commercial anything is possible in your case as saving the
peasants life was not a priority back then

I think the first car with four wheel hydraulics was the 1920 or1921
    Moon Special Six.
