"Police are trying to identify a biker who filmed himself speeding at
179mph - the fastest recorded on a British road.

He appears on video website LiveLeak UK racing another rider on a
dangerous stretch of the A628 Woodhead Pass in South Yorkshire.

His speed is captured by his digital camera which is attached to the
    bike's speedometer."

I've gone faster than that[1], though I wouldn't film myself doing it
    - that's just irresponsible.

    [1] indicated 186mph on the A1(M).

More than 99% of the population I should think, if you discount flying.
More than 99.999% if you discount bikes.
    This is true.

No, but getting nicked for it is.

After all, it's only speeding if you're caught - otherwise it's just
    going very fast.

    Well having watched the video...

I don't think I've seen sloppier riding before. The initial overtakes
in traffic were dodgy to say the least. The speedo is certainly kph
because the truck overtakes at the beginning are ready 60 odd and he's
    barely moving.

An R1 won't accelerate to 176mph that quickly, simple as that.
Besides, having ridden and driven that road hundreds of times, you
wouldn't be able to do 176mph on that road anyway, it's just too
    bendy.

Having been stuck behind road elephants on that stretch, they could be
going slow enough so that the speed shown is kmh, but they do sometimes
get up to a heady 40mph.

By the numbers on the dial, it looks like a litrebike. It also looks to
be up the top end of the revs, which would make sense if it was in top.
It's also a fair downhill when he opens up.

I'm not convinced that it's KPH - videos always look a lot slower.

It'd be nice to see a clear picture of the clocks to see what the Xph
blur is on the LCD screen.

So you reckon its only 109 MPH then?

That sort of speed is within even my experience and given the 'slow'
video effect discussed in a thread a while ago this looks more than a
    ton ten to me.

Purely hypothetically what speed do you think some unknown person might
achieve on that road in MPH?

I haven't a clue what speed you could reach there, but I do think 176
    would be out of reach.

I have never been along that road and it would certainly be out of mine
so I will offer no further opinions.

Splendid effort. I can only claim nudging 150 Kph on the D36 near Ger in
    Mormany.

BTW I can say this without fear of prosecution.
