Just thought I'd post a congratulation to Professor Marlan Scully of Texas
A&M University, who has in the past two years made two very interesting
discoveries related to optimising the internal combustion engine.

Last year Professor Scully published a paper on the 'quantum afterburner'
    http://physicsweb.org/article/news/6/2/2
which adds two additional steps to the combustion cycle which basically trap
wasted heat in the exhaust, convert it to laser power which then passes this
otherwise wasted energy back to the piston. Conceptually similar to the
afterburner, but using quantum physical principles that achieve dramatically
    lower wastage.

In his latest research, Professor Scully explains how to use a quantum heat
bath to combust the fuel to drive the piston with less wasted energy that
any current form of engine. I didn't quite understand the article, but good
    on him anyway.

No word on whether or not any manufacturers are examining his ideas.
