It's an AOCL (Automatic Open Crossing Locally monitored) - the train
approaches it and it starts the flashing light sequence, there's a
repeater light on a post for the driver and he approaches at a slower
speed so he can stop short if the lights have failed to go off.

They're predominantly used on low speed rural branch lines. The signs
were in Welsh so it's likely to have been on the Cambrian.

    Enjoy:

Yeah. I mean, if he'd collected them and they were his third, he gets to
retire on full pay, you know.

That huge field to the N. of it is where the cops got thoroughly stuck
    one night.

  8. Yah, chasing joyriders, who knew the area better than they did. Cop car
got *completely stuck*, as in up to the doors, stuck. Farmer refused to
pull them out on the grounds of "those bastards took my shotgun, they
can go and **** themselves" and two neighbours' tractors got mired.
Finally a hyeuuuge tractor got them all out by about 6am.
