Nothing very interesting. TAC market research phoned me today.

TAC apparently ran a court case to reduce a payout to a motorcyclist
(not legally at fault) for contributory negligence for not wearing
    safety gear

    JL
(don't have further info - ask Zebee - got it from MCC didn't keep
    email)

So if you do not have enough money to buy expensive protective gear you
will be penalized. The next thing, will you be penalized if you buy an
old car without air bags, abs braking because you contributed to injury
by not having enough safety features. If you walk along the beach and
surf vehicle smashes your foot you wont get full compensation because
you were not wearing hob nailed boots.

For the "Do you think additional safety equipment should be made
compulsory by law" question I said that, whilst I wear all the kit all
the time, I don't think additional kit should be mandated by law...
because I have enough regulations already, and you can't mandate
    common sense.

    That reason sounds a bit hollow to me because helmets are mandatory;
lots of people didn't (and don't) wear crash helmets where they don't
have to. This implies to me that boots and gloves are not common
    sense.

Any thoughts about model answers to a couple of these questions? Yeah
    - OK - What bike do you ride should be a Norge, but APART from that.

You certainly can't mandate common sense. Saturday arvo, Princes Hwy
southbound, Nowra: Black Hyosung 650 or similar with a passenger goes
honking past the two of us two so he can carve up a two into one merge
queue. She on the back is wearing trackies, t shirt and vest and happy
shoes with no socks. He's wearing a shell jacket, trackie pants and
thongs. I suppose they *did* have helmets on and at least the red P plate
    was clearly visible....
TL1000 went honking past us in heavy traffic on the Pirnces Hwy

Oops. Dunno how the TL line got left in there. It *got* there in the first
place 'cos I was discussing TLs when I started typing, but then I
obviously didn't delete it hard enough!

Trouble is, whilst you may wear all the gear all the time (and I think
it's very good that you do) currently you have the option of not doing
that. For example, if you somehow lost a glove, you could still ride
to the shops and buy another pair.

Do you believe you should be fined for not wearing all the gear all
the time? If you don't have a car, that would mean you would need two
of everything eg. what if someone pinches your nice new leather
jacket? Nice to have freedom, even if you never intend to exercise
    it.

All for freedoms, but I sometimes worry about the number of younger riders
that don't seem to get how much mess you can make to your foot or ankle in
even a reasonably simple drop (...and yes I know it's not that simple -
one friend walked away from a 200+Km/h stack touring and then lost the use
of his arm 6 mths later in an otherwise minor 30Km/h accident in Sydney -
wearing good gear both times) but a full complement of feet, toes and
ankles does help you enjoy normal active lifestyle more easily, not to
mention riding. (Grumpy old man mode off)

    On Oct 21, 10:09 am,
The NSW learner course has a very heavy emphasis on why you should
wear the right gear. It's just a matter of education... EDUCATE NOT
    LEGISLATE !! ahem <steps off soap box>

On Sunday 1st November I am running the The Arthurs Seat Challenge
    [http://www.sandstormevents.com.au/funrun_rego_09/index.htm]. It's
supposed to be raising awareness about road safety to year 11 students
(ie. age 17). Do you think I should run it in full motorcycle gear
including helmet and boots to highlight motorcycle safety?
If I get 500 yes answers here before the day, I'll do it.
