I go out for a run most mornings when I'm working at home. Usually along the
canal cos its a good surface and mostly flat. There is however one bit on my
run which heads downhill to where there used to one of those tilting
bridges across the canal. The path ends literally at the waters edge and you
have to turn left or right along the canal.

Except, it doesn't look *that* far across the canal and its been occurring
to me that if I went fast enough I could jump the fucker.

So for the past few days I've been thinking about this and today was the
    day.

Up on a running buzz, wind at my back, sprint like ****. Take off slap bang
on the edge of the canal and............

.........*no* fucking chance. All those years of not doing any long jump
training whatsoever paid off nicely as I just managed to clip the far side
with one leg before dropping into a jolly cold canal.

    Observations:

Canals are not that deep but they are very muddy.

So muddy in fact they can pull your trainer off.

Dipping under water looking for a trainer is not very nice.

Unlike, say fish, MP3 players do not like being underwater.

I had a similar thought last year, the canal near me had beckoned me to jump
it for ages (I used to do it as a kid)...

So I did the same, but I actually made it, until I came to land. I performed
quite a clumsy parachute roll, and broke two of my ribs. Fucking hell, did
    that hurt!

But you can't let the canal beat you - have another go, and be sure to video
    yourself.

That is QUITE the dirtiest JPEG I've seen in some time.

We go on a narrowboat most years, and I've often looked across bits of
canal and thought 'I could do that with a run up'.

I might not think that this year (two weeks time). IF I do, I am sure
the SO will have the video ready.

Aye, that occurred to me. Nasty, difficult to diagnose, presents as
"flu-like" symptoms to start with - then it kills you. Carried by
    rats, pissed into watercourses. Lovely.
I thought it was well worth a LOL.

Nice one, flash - you fuckwit.

I've just had a lipstick camera delivered. I see great potential for a
Touching the Void-type documentary of your experience. We could call it
Touching the Cloth or something. It would be great.

Pah. Its not the first time I've been in the canal. We have raft races most
years[1] and apart from a few bouts of blindness and a live fish erupting
from my forehead I've been fine.

[1] These used to be called "Canal Capers" until the signs were altered one
    year by some unknown humourist,

Just the first C was removed but in a very professional manner, leaving a
sign saying "ANAL CAPERS THIS WEEKEND. TEAMS OF FOUR. ALL AGES WELCOME ".

You going to make porn movies, or take dull and boring videos of your
    commute to work?

Perhaps he could write a script to to a context sensitive search and
replace IT terms with generic non IT phrases... What would be the best
    language to write it in?
